Kala UBass Megathread, Part 6

Here's a first recording with the Shortbass.

No making fun of my playing. :) I have a very funky setup here to record, and until I improve it, I can't hear myself while I am recording. Anyway, here it is.

It was recorded Direct. No effects, DIs, or EQ altering in any way.

Sounds good, Frank! I may be wrong, but if this is a di'ed recording, I wonder if there isn't an impedance mismatch? Was any preamp used? It sounds great, but there's just something about it that sounds like too low an impedance input...

No preamp of any kind. Direct into a USB recording device.

I did have the device on Low Level. I can do the same test on
High Level.

Hi Frank, I want to ask you about the feel of the new Thunder-Red strings. I know you have used the stock, black Kala strings, the Thunderguts and the Silver Rumblers. How do the Thunder-Reds compare. Are they sticky or smooth? Is the tension greater (I know it's hard to tell given the longer scale of this bass)? I'm fine with the tone of the new strings from what I hear but for me it really comes down to the feel of them. Any comments so far would be very welcome. Thanks.

Jeff

Sure, Jeff.

I can't judge yet on the Sticky part. That needs lots of time - because - with the other strings, I only experienced Sticky sporadically - not consistently.

Beyond that, I can say that the Reds are - softer. They have a slight rubbery feel to them, but not too rubbery. It's almost as if they have a feel that is In Between the Pahoehoes and the Thunderguts. I happen to absolutely Love the feel of the Reds.
It's an awesome middle ground.

P-Bass married Upright, well said... exactly the point.
Thanks Bassman for the clip... nice sound indeed and funky feeling too.
Hope Mimmo makes the Reds pretty soon which fit the Solid Body Calis with nice end pins.

  • So the shortbass pickup is passive, like the original u-bass?
  • How does the width at the nut and 12th fret measure compared to a u-bass?
  • Can you photograph it in some more detail?

I think what many of us are interested in is the new red strings, and how much louder acoustically it is compared to a u-bass.

The Italian video of the ukulele group was very instructive for me, I've never heard a u-bass with factory strings that could hold its own with other instruments without an amp.

Thanks for sharing, Frank.

Cleaning out my closet today. Kala sent this to me a while back & I just don't need it. So, I figure I oughta pass it along to someone who does need one!

[DEL]Free. ConUS only, please (sorry - don't want to deal with paperwork and fees). First pm'er takes it. Shipped USPS in an envelope with a smiley face. [/DEL]
