I wouldn't call him a creative genius, but then again that was never a requirement for moving a lot of units. But I thought selling a lot of records/making a lot of $$ was the holy grail anyway, according to many TBers.

First off, I know I'm probably not going to change anyone's mind on the subject , but I may as well try for those who are curious.

Just going through this thread made me feel like I am 12 years old again. I remember those days when I would think to myself "Rap sucks!" and I often thought I would never listen to artists such as Kanye West and Jay-Z. I was too cool for that stuff. But as time has gone my musical tastes have changed.

I love hip-hop and rap.

I'm not going to say that Kanye is a creative genius but he is extremely creative in his writting and production. He produces excellent music that can be quite soulful at times. For these reasons I often don't understand the amount of flack that Kanye gets on TB. I understand that He has an awful persona which is what many people are attacking in this thread. But how many of our legends of Rock and Roll were awful people in their personal lives and in some of their public personas? Yet we are still able to look past that for the music.

I understand the dislike for Kanye's newer stuff, especially songs like "All day," his performance of bohemian rhapsody (objectivly awful), and most things off of Yeezus. But why not take a look at some of his older music. Specifically a song from his first album called "Through the Wire."

Imagine you had no idea who this song is by and all you have to go on is this instrumental track. (Sorry you have to look at Kanye's ugly mug throughout)



As a bassist I love this song! Listen to that bassline! Nice and smooth, written in a style that that fits the song, just like everyone on this website praises in the other forums. It even locks in well with the drums! Along with these characteristics it is a very well produced song that pleases the ears.

Similar songs to this exist within his discography! I would highly suggest The College Dropout and Late Registration albums before you attempt to listen to stuff like Yeezus and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

Take a few minutes out of your day and listen to this track with your eyes closed and jsut lsiten to all of the parts of it and attempt to appreciate the artestry that went into this song!

I also understand that HIp-hop/rap may not be your style of music, but I would just suggest anyone to take a listen objectively before making a judgment on his musical ability.
