Why even compare? They're both talented pop singers who were put through the "star making machinery" and succeeded. No life changing songwriting or production skills (that I know of).
Just accept them for what they are/were, good pop artists.

But rich, nonetheless. I far prefer Karen's voice. There are some pretty cool KC imitators on YouTube. This one is cool ... I think she's singing phonetically.

As a musician Karen was a maniacal perfectionist that demanded every solitary note be perfect. If you could not perform at that level, you were gone, (no different than Bon Jovi, that fired their bass player for among other things, making too many mistakes in the course of a song.) And for those of you who are required to sing harmonies know how perfectly structured and spot-on, her and her brother Richard's voices were . I played in a rock band that demanded perfection, and took all the fun out of playing music. We practiced 3 nights a week, and played every weekend. I was required to call everyday and touch base with them, to the point that I felt that I was married to them, and my life did not belong to me. I grew to dislike them immensely, and I left them hanging just before a major gig. On the other hand, my playing improved, and music was not just a means to pick up girls anymore. They taught me that you are only as good as your equipment, so if you don't sound good, do NOT blame it on the equipment. It was a turning point in my life, and made me ask myself the question: HOW SERIOUS ARE YOU ABOUT YOUR MUSIC ? I can imagine that every musician that Karen played with reached a level of playing, that they had never been before. The song writing,the thick creamy richness of their voices gives me chills to this day. Looking at her as a woman Karen did nothing for me, On the other hand, due to the marketing genius, a pretty face, spandex pants, ONJ became a household name . Although ONJ voice has star quality, it is lacking the sultry, thick texture of KC. Why do all the good ones die young. RIP KC.
Olivia! Karen was just fine too but I guess that while she sang in The Carpenters she didn't get to be as much a star as she would have deserved to be
Yhea and she even beat out John Bonham in a best drummers poll....That I have read ticked him off. The poll was done by Playboy magazine so that may have been the reason for her beating out Bonham. I had read somewhere that she wanted to be a dummer more than a singer.
I had every intention of posting a wise acre comment and poking fun, but seeing all these other dudes sacrificing manhood for a serious response, I will do the same. I get sick to my stomach listening to most Carpenters songs, but Karen's voice I really do like. Give her a little of the Mamma Cass syndrome and a jobwith Fleetwood Mac instead of Stevie, and she'd be about perfect in my book. ON-J, not my thing at all.
