Double Bass Katie Thiroux

I guess I prefer jazz played by folks who've gone through gospel, R&B, blues, and funk... Ending up at jazz.
Those musics are not what they used to be. A musician her age who went through the current versions of those musics would have wasted a lot of time playing bad music and probably sound like garbage. The "jazz greats of old" who did that didn't always do it by choice, either. Even when they did it was a superficial aspect of anyone worth talking about. Statements like this actually devalues the work of the great jazz musicians.

It's really disappointing that this thread goes so quickly into mention of Cyndi Lauper and Kim Kardashian - I've never seen discussion of Larry Grenadier in here covering Jason Donovan or Jean Claude Van Damme... is there anything other than chromosomes that connects Thiroux and Kardashian?

Apologies on behalf of the site to any women reading this and wondering if the jazz world will treat them with respect

In my book, Katie Thiroux is a great bassist and musician in a very holistic way. I like the way she sounds, even when the music might or might not be my cup of tea.

...And Larry Grenadier is a virtuoso in a very holistic way. He is one of my favourite bassists and I absolutely love his sound. Mehldau ain`t my cup either, but there`s lots of stuff I really like with LG in it.

What she does isn't my cup of tea and I find it rather bland... I don't care for her feel or groove. If others like it fine... It has nothing to do with male or female... It's just boring to me personally. Something is missing... But obviously, someone likes what she's offering... Good on her! But, I'm not getting an emotional connection to her, so I listen and watch from an academic perspective...
If I see something that changes my mind, I'll go with it...

So far, everyone has gone with curved fingers, the way I teach and play. Still, the Rabbath followers say collapsed fingers don't cause health issues. I know why I do what I do, and I explain it. If someone wanted to argue for another accepted way of playing that doesn't get in the way of my other teaching ideas, I wouldn't worry about it.

Let's hope that they don't suffer any long-term health/joint/muscle issues, as a result of sloppy-esque "technique".
I let my students know that my comments surrounding "technique" these days are less about "look" and more about "feel/health".
Thanks.

Thanks, I was going to say the same thing...there's definitely some (un?)conscious sexism/chauvinism at work here.

I don’t get the judgement of technique here, just doesn’t make sense when evaluating someone as a musician/artist.
I really dig what she does and I respect those who may not. If I came across a clip on this forum that didn’t move the needle for me I’m not sure I’d feel inclined to comment....but to each his/her own.
I appreciate hearing a solo that utilizes the lowers registers and “more natural” speaking voice of the bass. Sure it’s not technically dazzling.
There definitely an old school vibe going on, particularly in the phrasing for me.
