Wow, that would be a beauty. A four string coco BMT would be a nice addition to the registry. I bet it sounds sweet. I love my Coco 6. It produces great tones.

Just wanted to let everyone know that there is a Ken Smith Flamed maple 6 string for sale on ebay. It looks like it is the same bass that is on thelowend.net. Here is the link for the auction:

Yeah....
I love the Smith website, and I don't even own one...but I'd love to hear some sound samples of the different models.

My frame of reference for the "Ken Smith sound" would be the first couple of John Patitucci records.

Thanks for the info Brian. I wonder how the bass sounds. Sometimes you get pretty descriptive on your website. I noticed that you recently had a inventory overload of Ken Smiths. Any particular reason, or is it just what the wind blew in.

Looks good, glad you are enjoying it. I Believe that was a New bass I had from ken or maybe it was just a New trade... I do go through a Lot of Smith, especially Used Smith's, Great basses.

The BMT's are great, I've played Daryl's as well.

Don't notice a big change other then my pictures has the case and goodies :smug:

I was very interested in purchasing the Charcoal Redwood Ken Smith 5, 20th Anniversary Bass, but the auction was ended early. I believe someone payed him $5500 to stop the auction. That was a great price for the seller, but it was also a very rare bass and that price could be viewed as a bargain in 10 years. Who knows?

It is interesting that there isn't really a vintage boutique bass market yet, although it is clearly going in that direction. When Carl Thompson, Ken Smith, Michael Tobias, the guy that makes Wal Basses, and a couple of the other hand crafters stop making basses, values will surely increase. Also as good wood becomes more scarce, so too will fine instruments.

If you ask me, a used exotic bass purchase today for under $3000 is a huge bargain. Anyone out there selling their Ken Smith BMTs? LOL

They rarely come up because their are so few of them and they sound so good.

I think it's a fantastic instrument and I hope to never part with it.

I have to admit though from reading this thread, my head spins with all of the model numbers (BMT, BT, BSR, CR, etc) and suffixes (elite, GN, etc).

Can someone point me to the simple acronym decoder so I can tell what the heck I'm playing?

BTW, I'm pretty sure the "4", "5", "6" or "7" in the middle corresponds to the number of strings. :)

Actually I own 4 KS basses. Among several other top of the line basses like Fodera, Alembic, Ritter, Ken Lawrence these instruments are my favourites in sound and feel.

Top wood is exhibition grade flamed walnut. Not really eye-catching like the Crotch Walnut tops from the Black Tiger series, but a deep 3D flame which I have never seen before as a walnut top. The neck has been made from the BMT series. The body is 5-pc which seems to add less compression than the 7-pc-bodies, just to my ears.
