My first bass is a Ken Smith burner I purchased from a friend about 2014. The bass is from 1993 if I remember correctly.
I went through a period of buying and selling basses obsessively about 2019/2020. I had enough foresight to “sell” the Ken smith to my father in law so that I wouldn’t lose that bass.
He passed away in 2021 and I’ve received the Ken smith back earlier this year. Which is great because it’s can “never be sold” by request of my mother in law.
I play my 50’s style P bass for everything. It’s the sound and feel I enjoy and fits my style, I enjoy using pedals and my P bass is an excellent platform for effects and by itself.
I’ve never really enjoyed the sound of the Smith, feel is good but the sound I don’t care for. In my opinion, it doesn’t take effects well, and I’m not into a high fi sound.
The heart of this post is this:
I’d like to change the pickups and remove the electronics so it is a passive bass, but for whatever reason I’m having paralysis by analysis. Since it’s a “Ken smith” I don’t want to essentially turn it into a fender jazz bass, but it is sentimental and I would like to enjoy playing it.
The bass either sits at my teaching studio or at home, so it is played regularly. I’m curious what others experience or feelings are, and if you’ve gone through a similar situation.
I may just be putting too much “juju” in the Ken smith name. Thoughts?
*The post is trigger warning because I know it may be offensive to some to modify this bass AND I know I will receive the “don’t ask the internet for advice” folks* but I am for the sake of curiosity and discussion
