Key West? What to do?

Im going to be in Key West tonight, until the 4th. Anyone have any suggestions for good music venues? Anyone's band playing that I should check out? How about open mic's? I've got a guitar player friend that is already there. Maybe we could jam.
Any ideas???

Do what the natives do ... sit on the beach and sip Margueritas. That's what I did last time I was there (about a year ago). Hog's Breath Saloon and Sloppy Joe's have band most nights. There's a roof top place near the marina that has live acoustic music many nights. Don't know about open mics/jams, though.

Remember - Key West is a rock, so there's not really a beach anywhere around. You have to go a few Keys back to get a decent beach (Marathon Key comes to mind), but it's not like it's all that far.

That being said, I would just go cruising. There's a good strip of clubs and you should be able to find some live music and a good time. Isn't Spring Break coming up?

I've heard Sloppy Joe's is a good time. I'll check out Hog's Breath as well. And, yes, spring break. I'm guessing all of the music there should be top notch. I think a Marathon trip is on our plans as well.
I'm not really into the whole JB thing (That's not James Brown either). I could listen to some heavy reggae though. I just imagine it to be all island music. I like funk and blues and the like.
Really, just looking for anything specific I shouldn't miss out on.

Yeah, I couldn't imagine that someone suggested there are no beaches in Key West. Atlantic or Gulf ... take your pick!

I second Blue Heaven..... Especially for the Lobster Omelets!

Live music is EVERYWHERE...... If you can't find it......You're doing it wrong.

Find your way to Mallory Square ('Bout an hour before sunset) and work your way to Duvall Street, then head down Duvall street. Everything else will take care of itself after that.

I'll be down there in a few weeks... I typically like Irish Kevin's and The Green Parrot. The Bull & Whistle is good some nights too. Then there are the evenings that you just walk down Duval and stop in anyplace that has a happening crowd. Not sure where you're staying, but there's a place up on White Street around the corner from the place I usually stay that has the best Cuban coffee on the island (which will help the morning after you drink your way down Duval!)

Another vote for the Hog's Breath. I got to see the Carter Brothers there. It's a great venue. Sloppy Joe's didn't impress me.

We always enjoyed whoever was playing at the Green Parrot on any given night. A lot of original music gets booked there as well which seemed unique to the area.

I love the Keys. When I go I'm drunk or buzzed pretty much the whole time. Great deep sea fishing, find a captain with a cooler who will bring your haul to the pier, prep your catch, and take 'em to the restaurant next door. Freshly cooked fish right out of the sea, the best.

Hogs Breath and Green Parrot both well worth checking out. Sloppy Joes and Margaritaville are both gonna be full of tourists and over-priced drinks.

I have a place a couple of Keys up from Key West. Two rules, don't hurt anybody and don't hurt the wildlife. You're pretty much free to do whatever you like after that. DO NOT "F" WITH THE KEY WEST CHICKENS." It's big bucks if you hurt a chicken, I'm serious about this. Don't do anything really stupid, like get drunk in a strip joint, or wander around Duval street at 2 a.m. drunk. Bad things will ensue. Now for music. Pretty much every bar has some type of live music. As someone said start at Mallory Square and head east young man, up Duval. Stop in whatever bar has music you like. The Green Parrot is a block off of Duval and has good music. The place on the docks someone mentioned is the "Schooner Wharf." Good food there too. If you get out of Key West try "Boondocks" at mile marker 27 or so. They have music every day. Also "Mangrove Mama's" on Sugarloaf Key. Small, looks like a dive, but good food and live music. Another way to find out who's playing where is to listen to 104.1 Keys Radio on the web. They are always running info on who's playing, where and when. Other then that enjoy. Use sun block if you go to the beach, Higgs or Smathers in Key West, Bahia Honda (one of the best, if not the best beach in the U.S.) just east of Big Pine. I'll be down in May, so if you do anything nefarious I'll visit you at the county jail (it has ocean views ). Keep the groove

South Beach, Smathers Beach, CB Harvey Beach Park, Monroe County Beach ... on the Atlantic side. Many others just north of KW, on the causeways.
