Keyboardist called Boomerang

He'll either find another band to mooch off of, or he'll go back to tormenting you when he gets bored....

Please, no. Just...no.

You know this thread had it all -heroes, villians, nutty keyboard players, a a bass player fighting for justice
a legless cat(well now it does). AND it had a happy ending and epilogue. You rarely get all of that on TB
Good stuff Brewster Rooster

And if it had been a double feature, there would have been cartoons between feature films! (Remember when?)

Alright! And NOW you can fire the drummer!

Trying to avoid it. We actually like him!

I like to watch Office Space at least once a year, but haven't yet in 2016. Thanks for the reminder!

Peace out, all.

Holy wow. It isn't over! Get this:

We have a fun local gig that happens about once every month and a half - medium sized club. Our latest installment was this past Friday. I got out of work at 5, made a U-turn through the shower, snatched up my stuff, and beat cheeks to get set up in time to have a little dinner before we played. My GF's son and significant other decided to attend as we hadn't hung out in a few months. We all got there at about the same time, chilled and conversed for ten minutes or so, then I went to get my stuff put together.

After I was all set up and verified, I returned to the table. GF's son asked, "Isn't your old keyboard player's name [Boomerang]?" I answered yes, and immediately asked what made him think of this. "Well, because I'm pretty sure I just saw him over at the bar. I overheard him telling the barmaid that even though he's not playing tonight, he's with the band. I think he was ordering a drink on you guys' tab."

* Palm to face. *

I looked over at the bar, but didn't see Boomerang. There was already a pretty good crowd in the place so I admittedly couldn't see everything or everybody, but I was still quite curious. When BL#1 showed up I pulled her aside and relayed the story so she could keep an eye on the bar tab, then sat back down. And two minutes later, who comes walking up? "Hey, Dave!" he says. I shook his hand but remained seated - I guess that's my baked-in mode of contempt. He said something to the effect of "I don't have much to do anymore, so I'm just jumping from place to place tonight."

And I was thinking, oh, how my heart bleeds. On a scale of zero to utterly ludicrous, he'd finally redlined it.

That was the end of our interaction and I went back to my normal evening routine. Though he was none of my concern anymore, I was personally dedicated to ending his presence at that venue if he created any problems whatsoever. Even my GF's son offered several times to eject him personally - he seemed quite eager - although I jokingly convinced him we should table the discussion until the situation really broke bad. As we were about to get started, BL#1 told me, "That was weird. [Boomerang] put on a sickening sweet face and told me how much he missed me! Eeeww! I don't know about the bar tab yet, but I'll check on break." We proceeded to play.

The good part of the whole thing was that we had some celebrity power in the house who came and sat in with us for several songs, making for a musically eventful evening, and overall the gig itself was a great success. Boomerang was nowhere to be seen. Apparently, he'd just come to avail himself of a free drink and a shot at schmoozing the BL.

I am now convinced. This guy really, really isn't going to quit. And as long as we don't have to put up with his playing again, I suppose he can show up to any publicized event he wants to...still, it's weird. Like, off-the-chain weird.

I have to go out of town next weekend so the bass chair for Saturday's gig has been subbed out; however, I will do Friday night downtown before I leave. Tune back in - the saga continues!

Jeez!.....Looks like you're going to have to get some sort of restraining order on the guy.....

BTW....What do you call a boomerang that doesn't come back?............

Ah, good point...I didn't really finish that part of the story. The venue was pleased enough with the turnout that they picked up our entire bar tab. So nothing was taken from the BL's pocket - it would be up to the venue to pursue it, and I don't think they'd worry about it over a single screwdriver.

But at least he put himself on their radar, and that might be a nice pet to have in the future. !

Get a new keyboard player?

Sorry your band drama is so entertaining to the rest of us. I once had a similar situation. Had a guitarist "friend" come to one of our shows and had him sit in for a couple tunes. He then proceed to show up and play all night at our next 5 shows. We ended up having to fire a guy that was never in the band in the first place,

It's never over with people like this.

We have a guy in our village who has had the nickname (to the point where no one knows his real name) Araldite (a brand of epoxy glue) since I met him over 20 years ago. he invites himself everywhere he is not wanted, and glues himself to any woman who won't straight out tell hm to his face to F off, even then he might stick around. He is either bad at reading other peoples' intent, or has developed a very thick skin; I think it's a combination of the two.

Anyway, there is no polite or decent way to change the behaviour of people like this, and I personally wouldn't allow it for many reasons. But if you really want to stop it, you or someone else will need to confront this guy, and steel your heart and gird your loins before doing battle, because he has a lifetime's practice manipulating peoples' better natures.

I would take him aside quietly, and in a very calm and menacing voice, tell him that you are not buying his crap anymore. If he EVER pulls the slightest stunt like claiming he is in the band, putting a drink on the band's tab, or trying to get up and play with you at any gig, he will find out just what a bad decision he has made, and he will regret the day for a long time. Look him in the eye, ask him if he understands, and before he has a chance to start arguing or pleading (because he will), turn slowly and walk away without looking back. You really have to pretend you are in a movie and seem to be deadly serious and extremely menacing without giving the slightest bit more information or detail.

He will leave you alone, and find others to torment. If he tries it on again, you have to be prepared to back it up with an unreasonable amount of force (not violence- but action that shows how deadly serious you are. Have the bouncer throw him out physically, have the club ban him, have the other members back you up, whatever. When I dealt with Araldite this way after he crashed a dinner party of mine, I did it in front of everyone in a voice loud enough that people could hear if they really listened, and then leaned in at the end as I turned him towards the door, and half-whispered some real psycho crap about how I would mess him up physically if he so much as caught my eye in public again, really twisted stuff. It was all quite fun but weird at the same time, I'm usually very straight with people.

Anyway, he never crashed an event of mine again and he stayed clear of me in public without being obvious about it, but his behaviour towards others remained exactly the same. Make of it what you will.

I figured I should finish this out. Despite the few appearances post-termination, this whole situation has quieted. BL#1 last night said she heard our nemesis found a new band. For the past few gigs we have not been plagued...er, blessed...with his presence.

We also (unfortunately, because he was a nice guy) had to let a sax player go. Zero drama there, though. He wished us well, and went on his way. It sucks on a personal level. But it strengthens the core of the band, which is now a five piece with two part harmonies, and one of two interchangeable monster players on lead. The new bookings are coming in steady, with a fresh gig in North Carolina for September, Atlanta in November, and I'm working on re-capturing a nice Alabama gig I used to play with a different group. We picked up a lucrative New Year's booking, and may have lines opening for some familiar names in north GA and Knoxville later this year. So I suppose all's well that ends well.

Fingers crossed!
