Is there anything I can do at FOH to get a little more sustain out of the kick drum? Or does that just come down to tuning?

IMNSHO, kick drum with lots of sustain just gets in the way of the bass.
I dont think he means sustain so much as a somewhat long decay.
What that calls to mind is the "DOOOOM, DOOOOM, DOOOOM" sound I hear emanating from low rider pickup trucks. I hope that's not what you are going for; if the drummer in a band in which I was the bassist used that kind of kick sound, I'd look for another band.

Drum brain, and pick the sound you want.
maybe not all that much. The drum set is pretty good, we'll have a new one soon though, which will change things.
