When he was alive, he was largely in Jaco’s shadow. Looking back, there is no denying the Jaco influence, but Bailey’s own voice was loud and clear too.

It was right after his first solo album dropped. Bottoms up
I’ve been a fan ever since.

Sitting around the house blowing one of Trane's awesome solos. A steel trap brain. He never looked once at the board until a few quick glances at the end when those chords were popping. Very impressive dude.

I first heard about Victor Bailey from bass player magazine. It was the issue with Chi Cheng from Deftones on the cover, iirc. Both died way too young.

Oh yeah baby ! and Vic with his trusty Pensa Suhr was always a joy to watch playin', nice jam to wake up in the morning here, always a fan of Terje too, he sounds like if Andy Summers really played in jazz fusion power trio, there's that "enveloppe" and suddenly he brings silly creative mind blowing effects and solos

Terje one of the pillars of Scandi-Garde - Scandinavian - Avant- Garde. Icy calculated chaos. Saw him with Jan Garbarek as well as Miroslav Vitous

So what's wrong with a Fender Jazz bass again? and if I am not mistaken stock Fender pickups. He is getting so much sounds out of that thing. Beast of a player, under-rated. EDIT -- looks like EMGs. Well a lot folks on TB do not dig EMGs, but they always work and blank canvass if you have the artistry for it.

Moral of the story. Never be afraid of the bridge pickup to be on it's own. A drummer with decent footwork will do the thump for you

Went to one of his gigs in Tokyo back in the late 80s/early 90s. We chatted afterwards and it turned out we had mutual friends. He was a very sweet man. An extremely intelligent man who had recently been playing for Weather Report. His manager joined us. She had also represented Jacko and so the conversation went there. She spoke of how everyone tried to help him and how tragic his death was. Never thought we'd all be lamenting Victor's death with the same sense of loss.

I tell this story whenever Victor comes up in conversation. Weather Report’s first tour post Jaco….2 out of touch teens go to the Warner Theater in DC to see Jaco. The curtain goes up and we were like “who’s this guy??”…….10 minutes later we looked at each other and said “Wow! Who IS this guy!!??!!”
I was a fan immediately. Fantastic work with WR and Bottoms up is awesome.
