Killing defenseless animals (do musicians hunt?)

I started deer hunting again last year after my son asked us along with him and his new wife. None of us got anything last year, but she got two in the previous two seasons, one of them an 8-point buck. She almost accidently removed her thumb cutting the thing, too. You'd never know to look at her -- she's petite and weighs 110 lbs., if that even.

It's easier than bow hunting IME. I have iron sights on my Blackhawk, and it's the best gun for the heavy brush that I own.

.44? I bet that's got a kick, fine looking gun ; ) Here in the U.K. personal handguns were reviewed and revoked after the 'Hungerford' incident back in '87, I've always had a great interest, but then I picked up a bass and the rest went out the window ; )

I do want to see how a bow is for getting some kind of grouping together, something new to take-up.

I am not sure why, but much like target shooting, women almost always display an unaccountable natural talent for hunting. If they can bottle up doe piss, why can't they bottle that? I'd buy some.

I am not a huge deer hunting guy, but gimme my Browning Sporting Over/Under shottie and I'll go after fowl for days on end. I <3 my shotgun.

I'll be down in Virginia in two weeks with my Browning Citori Lightning working the Chesapeake Bay Retrievers - can't wait!

Here's our 4 year old 'pup' learning the ropes at a recent hunt trial in upstate Mass:

GOOD BOY!!

Don't do it myself, mostly for the same reason Ron White doesn't, "it's really early in the morning and it's usually really cold".
I figure if we kill off the predators, we need to take their place, so I'm all for an organized hunting season.
I would personally love to go on one of those big game safaris. I'd probably only shoot a camera because I'm just not that good a shot with a rifle and I'd hate to make some critter suffer because I blew the shot. Let somebody else with skill do it.
I used to shoot a Blackhawk in .357. I can only imagine what a .44 is like.
I did get to shoot a Casull at the range once. That was interesting. The owner had another custom handgun which name I no longer recall that had a long barrel, very little kick and the flattest trajectory I have ever seen.

Since I am in the process of moving, I have a limited amount of time to return to my home state of Maine this month for one of the best reasons to be in New England in fall. I am referring of course to rifle season, which opened last Saturday. I will probably only get out during the most crowded weekends due to my work and moving schedule, and thus doubt I will get the opportunity to put a little green tag on Bambi this year. So as I tend to do when I get bummed about something, I am turning to talkbass OT.

Is anyone else getting skunked on hunting this year?

My spot for our early antlerless season fell through, but I'll still be hunting about 7-8 days of our 15 day regular firearm season here in Michigan.

Last year I got two doe during the early antlerless season and one more during regular firearm season - and we're just about out of meat...

This year I'll be lucky to get one, which means we'll actually be buying some beef this year.

Wish Maine's hunting sesaon worked like that! I had an excellent chance at a nice doe the day before the season started while out scouting. She stood perfectly broadside less than 20 yards away for about a minute after we jumped her in a clearing. I hadto let her go of course, not only because it was a day early but I had no doe tag. Pity, since I would be eating like a champ right now otherwise.

Not sure why Maine remains so restrictive on game limits vis a vis deer, our herd could easily sustain taking one of either sex during rifle season, provided they shaved a little off the extended blackpowder/archery bag limits. People who take advantage of every deer season can bag a bunch of deer, but rifle guys during the regualr season get one buck with just the standard license.

I've been hunting since I was 10 years old. Hunting is one of my main hobbies (besides bass and sports of course), mostly fowl and moose. This season hasn't been good for me. I haven't shot anything, yet. A few misses with a shotgun, and that's all.

In Michigan it's strongly dependent on where you hunt.

Archery tags are good for doe or buck.

Rifle season doe tags are distributed by county, and by private/public land. So you buy say a private land doe tag for Ionia county.

We also have an early antlerless season for 3 days in September in the massively overpopulated parts of Michigan.

Maine has about 200,000 deer, and hunter success rates around 20%.

About 6.5 deer per sq. mile on average across the state.

Michigan has about 1.7 million deer. Hunter success rates are ~50%. Hunters in Michigan kill ~500,000 deer every year.

About 29 deer per sq. mile on average across the state.

aborgman,
Very interesting information on the deer saturation in our two states. Our doe are broken up in wildlife management districts, and there are some that issued none this year, even for archery. Sounds like there are some seriously deer packed areas in Michigan, I might need to go visit sometime.
