Killing defenseless animals (do musicians hunt?)

aborgman,
Very interesting information on the deer saturation in our two states. Our doe are broken up in wildlife management districts, and there are some that issued none this year, even for archery. Sounds like there are some seriously deer packed areas in Michigan, I might need to go visit sometime.

Our most populate counties/deer management units are pushing numbers in the 60+ deer per square mile.

I live in Alaska. Huting is nearly mandatory here. Gave up hunting a few years ago. I might go with the right guys for the right game but generally, I'm not into hunting anymore. My objection to hunting mostly centers around the point that humans don't hunt like animals do. We seek out the largest, healthiest, most regal of the bunch and kill them as a conquest. Animals on the other hand seek out the slow, weak ones for food. I think that as we continue to kill off the trophy animals we are weakening the gene pool. I enjoy hunting for food; I'm against trophy hunting. I don't mind if others hunt, but I usually don't go. Not to mention, it's an expensive hobby. I like hunting birds and rabbits mostly. Gave up the moose hunting years ago. Other peole hunting doesn't bother me; I just don't do it anymore.

I've thought about hunting many times. I think it would be awesome if it weren't for the fact that I'm squeamish about killing stuff...

There are a lot of places here in Jersey that are saturated with deer and assorted varmints, though we can't really hunt with rifles.
It would have to be black powder, .22 for the smaller varmints, or bow-hunting.

...bow-hunting.
Now THAT'S the way a real man hunts! When I was a kid, I remember a guy who used to hunt black bear every year with the same method. In Alaska, you're allowed to bait black bear (ONLY! No other animals). This dude would get all camo'd up and go hide INSIDE the garbage dumpster at the foot of a nearby hiking trail. When the bear would open the dumpster to forage for food, this dude would stand up and ZAP! nail the bear up close and personal. I doubt I'd ever have the nuggets to try that...but that was freakin' manly as all hell!

I've never gone bow hunting because it's expensive (like every hobby) and I haven't learned how to shoot a bow worth a darn. I've played around with an Army buddy down at the archery range, but I was never able to put the arrow where I wanted it. Actually, neither of us were any good. Archery is harder than it looks. Anyway, if I was going to go big game hunting again (e.g. moose) I'd rather do it with a bow than a rifle.

Bow hunting...that's some macho shizzy right there, man.

Now THAT is freaking nuts!!!

I recently moved and we're on the edge of about 15+ acres of woods and cornfields (which for central Jersey is a lot.. In Alaska, I'm sure that's someone "small backyard" :))
But Just recently I spotted a couple of freshly-built tree stands in the woods. I'm assuming one or two of the neighbors probably bow-hunt back there. If I can find the owners I'd like to talk with them about hanging out for a hunt or two if nothing more than to just see what it's all about.

In Northern California, living in Eureka at the time, in the Trinity Alps region, I used to deer hunt with my S+W .44 Mag (in stainless of course)---great times and bagged a few. On our longer 3 wk outtings we ran into tons of bears there as well. Big bruisers. That's why I also had along my .338 Mag Model 70. In fact, using my .338, I actually barked a squirrel up a huge Pondersa pine once---out flew the guts and blowing it off the side of the tree, it landed almost at my feet, just about perfectly cleaned. I strutted for a while with that shot until my buddy told me to stop being a jazz-hole.

BTW: Nothing like fresh backstrap and fresh liver sizzling on a stick over a fire. Or a bullet-gutted squirrel in the pot.

I have never went , I tend to freak out if i csnt shower daily .

I do keep a pellet gun with hollowpoint pellets next to my window. Chipmunks and birds make alot of noise and trust me do not disturb me when I am sleeping. Yesterday a chipmunk was making some loud noise getting into my garbage, well he is not alive anymore shot him in the neck.

With a black bear I could see someone willing to do that, but you have to be practically suicidal with a brown bear or grizzly. Freakin HUGE. I'd probably wet myself before I could get a shot off.

On that note, speaking of hunters with balls, doing things the old fashioned way, I am reminded of Dennis Dunn, who holds the current world record for a Grizzly that he shot in Alaska. With not a compound or recurve, but a longbow. From 8 YARDS AWAY, and reportedly stuck between the bear and a cliff facing. Don't even think about revoking his man card!

My dad taught me how to shoot when I was 5 or so (.44 magnum revolver... smart move, dad.) But the only things I've ever killed with projectile weapons were cockroaches with airsoft guns, and only if I found them inside; I empathize way too easily with animals.

But my uncle's a bow hunter, and I'm not a vegetarian, so I don't have anything against stuff like that. Do what you want, so long as you don't kill me, ya know?

I can see someone being offended by trophy hunting; if you feel that way, that's up to you. Personally, I don't shoot anything that I don't find to be delicious. I've eaten alot of wild game and I don't really view it as anything different than the meat you get from your grocery store, but in some cases it's actually better - like deer meat, which is not only waaay leaner than any beef you'll ever have, but it's also organic, free-range and antibiotic free. Some say it tastes gamey, but that's probably because they don't know the right way to prepare it. Personally I love it.

I like to hunting in Mexico, deers have great racks, we hunt with a rifle, I use a 30.06 or 7mm magnum, my dad have a .270, my uncle likes the .243 and my cousin has a .308.

Shoting distances are large with 500 feet as average, few years ago my dad killed a deer with a 1100 feet shot. I went hunting last year for the first time in Michigan, very different way: distance are short, racks very very small and as I understood rifles are not allowed so I use a 12 shotgun. I am saving money for a hunting trip to canada next year :)

I'm surprised it took close to 3 whole pages before the first self righteous anti-hunter comments came out.

lol yep, surprised me too.

The whole "hunting bambi" thing cracks me up. It's as though animals never die in the wild until evil evil man comes along and kills one. You know, there's no such thing as a deer being torn to shreds and eaten by wolves...there's no such thing as a raccoon getting into a bird's nest and eating the babies... why, there's noooo such thing as one animal killing another at all. Nope. None of that happens in the wild. All animals are immortal and living in a nirvana of absolute peacen health and harmony until some "self righteous wimp" comes along with a gun and "murders" one.. which ironically by some sort of strange twist of fate is usually a far less traumatic death then being shredded to death by wolves. But whatever :p
