I agree. Just like Spyro Gyra, the Rippingtons quickly went from a decent pop/jazz band in the very earliest days to total cheeze. Same thing happened to Michael Franks IMO. Even Sandborn and Larry Carlton and Ritenour followed this unfortunate path eventually (the Yellow Jackets were one of the few from this era who mostly escaped this... primarily due IMO to Mintzer).

The Rippingtons, IMO, took that cheeze to a much smellier level though.

Club Nocturne was with Mintzer.
IIRC, I thought that album was heading in more of a Spyro Gyra w/ vocals, etc vibe. Not cool, IMO.
The 'jackets' recent stuff sounds real good.

Kim is a super talented bassist and a very versatile one as well.

And the most down to earth kat you could ever meet.

His solo CD's are worth having in every serious bass players collection. They really show his talent in a different setting other than the Rippingtons.

And don't forget Oscar Cartaya. To dump on a groups entire catalog is to dump on a veritable who's who of smokin' bassists and a real slam on some extremely talented musicians. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion of course, but give credit where credit is due. Scott Ambush is one hellacious bassist/composer and as Jauqo pointed out makes an excellent instrument as well.

Oscar is a smokin' bassist. I liken him as a Latin Marcus Miller! Jauqo loves when I say that!! :D

+1 Love the players, not so much the music, per my previous posts.

I've played some horribly cheezy gigs like everyone else. You do what you have to do to make a living. Nothing wrong with that.

+1 I'd take the gig:p I was commenting on the music as a listener and consumer. If you really dig that stuff, god bless you!

And to be fair, they never descended to the depths of the current batch of wankers (Boney James, Peter White, etc., if I have those names correct). My god, is that stuff just bad... PERIOD!

I still cringe when I remember those Rippington video's when VH-1 still did the 'smooth jazz Sunday morning show' (Sunday Brunch or whatever it was called back in the 80's).

Which is basically 4lbs of Spicy Hotwings, some healthy doses of Slayer and Pantera, followed by two gallons of hot coffee. That should clear him out!

Cheezy Smooth Jazz is kind of like Musical Grapenuts. Sure, I can read the box and see that everything in there is wholesome and good for me, but damned if I'm gonna eat any of it.

I dig this video because it features my favorite composer, favorite sax player and one of my all-time favorite bassists :D.

To all of the smooth jazz naysayers, your passionate hatred is quite amusing :D. Spyro Gyra, Ripps, Yellowjackets, Jeff Kashiwa, etc - my favorite style of music since the early 1980's.

I love the stuff every bit as much as you hate it :D:D.

OK but why did radio stations all over America do away with the smooth Jazz format?
