Yours has very different woods though, right?





Then there is the endless urge to experiment, that I completly understand, sometimes you juat have to try things.

Hell, I've never, ever been happier with basses stock than I have been with my Roscoes, yet I'm looking at getting a couple of sets of Delano soapbars, and Aguilar pre-amps..... :scowl:

OK - this morning, things are looking up! Since I already had a toggle switch hole cut in my bass's top, I ordered my NTMB with a 3-way toggle switch to let me choose the mid frequency (rather than the usual push-pull mid pot). 250 Hz, 500 Hz and 800 Hz are the suggested starting points, and that's how Roscoe wired it up.

This morning I changed the 500Hz option to 432 Hz, and that's the magic sauce to my ear. The 250 Hz is nice, but a bit too boomy & muddy on my bass. And the 800 Hz is not really beefy at all. The 432 Hz is nice, it seems to fill in the tonal hole I've been hearing.

So I might be happy!! I'm not 100% certain yet, but I've definitely got a tone that I could be happy enough with to try on a gig. I'll try to record it, too. I know I REALLY struggled to find a good recorded tone when I was doing that video intro clip...

Yep - my neck is quite different (wenge wedge vs standard maple/PH/maple on the other two). But they're all Ash bodied with fairly hard tops (Koa, Bosse, QM).

I'm feeling a little bi-polar the past 24 hours. Depressed with my tone one minute, happy with it the next... argh!!!

Ah, the proof is in the pudding... I just overdubbed the bass part (AGAIN!!!) for our video intro using King Koa this time. It sounds pretty bitchin' to my ears.

This was recorded direct through my Alembic F1X preamp (B-M-T set 4-10-2 which is flat with a slight bass boost) into my M-Audio FastTrack Ultra 8R USB interface. The bass's pickup blend was centered, the mid selector was on 432 Hz, and I used a slight bass boost & moderate mid boost.

The 432 Hz setting has brought back the punch down low that I felt I was missing... whew!! :help::D

You don't know how close I was to that point last night... that NAMM show Roscoe that baltimore is claiming might well have become mine if he hadn't jumped on it...

The sound clips sound great Greg. I'm beginning to think that it's hard to compare basses via sound clips though.
I've been recording a new version of "Whipping Post" today and the new signature 3006 with the Roscoe Bart P/U's/Bart 3-band pre sounds very close to sound that I got from my Roscoe 3005 with the Bart Classic P/U's/Demeter pre. How could that be? :confused:

I'm thinking that the recording process & devices affect the tone as much as the instrument (and maybe more in my case).

Don't make anymore changes to the bass until you get a chance to gig out with it.

It sure is a pretty bass! DO NOT SELL THAT BASS! :)

Yep, and it gets worse as the mix gets denser. On this short video intro clip I've been working on, I've been amazed at the impact that the electric guitar has on my bass tone. You really need to give each instrument it's own space in frequency and in the stereo field. By the time you do that, the real character of any instrument gets a little lost. That's why I still try to push out naked bass tracks any time I do a big project...

And, on the other end, everyone's gonna be listening through a different setup.

I'm using Bose headphones, which I'd imagine are making everything sound bassier, and darker than they're recorded.
