King of Punk/Pop

I used to like it, but freeman is just completelly over the top and ruins the songs imho, the better rancid songs are the more basic ones i think, altho the solo on axiom is pretty cool

If its pop punk i prefer Greg K from the offspring by far, his bass lines are cool yet simple and go with the music, where-as rancid just sound completelly flung together and such

never heard of the clash anyone ? . . . .


Best punk bassist has to be Craig "Ahead" Setari tho, great lines, great sounding setup, and it compliments the rest of the music, unlike freeman in rancid


And, also, if this is a pop-punk poll, where's fat mike?

it's not really a fair comparison. i think they are equally as good really but matt is clearly the more "impressive" player, i think most bands would prefer to have mike on board tho

Freeman hands down. Though I think I would rather watch dirnt live, it's more of a show with him.

I shudder at the lack of Karl Alverez (Descendents/ALL) as a choice in the poll.

As much as I like Matt Freeman (and Mike for that matter) I have to agree with this. Karl is an awesome bassist.

What deffining points are you using to say who is better?Techincality or song writting?Id rather listen to Mike Dirnt play bass then Freeman,But I like Rancid musicaly more then Greenday.I like listening to dirnt cause I think he has a better space and timing then use as many runs as freeman. Not saying that freeman dosent no what he is doing. And Im sure Mike Dirnt can do about everything matt freeman does. Just cause you dont do something dosent mean you cant.

same for me. i love green day and i wanted to vote for mike cause he's from green daya nd they are my favorite band...

but...

this isn't really a competition. freeman is the better bassist.

Of the two of them: I've got to go (with reservations) with Matt Freeman. Not because of Rancid, simply because of Op Ivy. I personally like both of their styles and lines very much, and if anything from either one has ever crept into anything I've played it'd be from Mike Dirnt: but every time I pull out Energy and listen to it, as raw and sloppy as it is, I just get a nice ear-to-ear grin.

Exactly, even i can play maxwell murders, well, used to be able to play (why oh why did i stop when i went to uni! ), but i still stand by matt being completelly over the top and ruining the music

I might be alone on this, but I kinda hate the Maxwell Murder solo. It's... fast... he's got that down, but it's just a guitar solo played on bass. If I handed any lead guitarist a bass, that's what they'd sound like.

This is like the hardest question I've ever been asked. While Matt is undoubtedly more skilled and trained, Mike has such a presence and sound an attitude and uniqueness. They're both awesome players.

Matt's a really good riffer though. He's the only thing that makes Rancid/Op Ivy worthwhile.
