Hey, I'm with you, but you're going back 15 years before this conversation's context. One could definitely make a case for the roots of 90s pop/punk being guys like Graham Maby, Bruce Thomas and Colin Moulding's early work with XTC (plus Magazine, The Clash, Gang Of Four, The Rezillos, Bruce Foxton in the Jam, etc. I could go on all day, really), but that's the nature of rock and roll.

Of the two, Matt Freeman's the more explosive bassist by far. I have a really hard time with his tone, but his playing is quite something. To dismiss Rancid as merely ska-punk or whatever just doesn't take into account the wide range of influences they've exhibited and yet made their own. I'm not a giant Rancid fan by any measure, but I own a bunch of their records (and my "Ruby Soho" 45 still makes my big toe shoot up in my boot). I think they took thing a step or two further than Operation Ivy.

Admittedly, I'm not that into the punk/pop genre, but I haven't heard anyone come close to reaching Bruce's stuff.

Different strokes for different folks, I really dig his tone. Great grindy, aggressive overdriven stuff. Especially strong on Indestructible and Life Won't Wait.

I'm pretty sure Rancid isn't pop-punk. Green Day is, and I think Mike Dirnt is an amazing bassist.
Here's my top 5 list.

1. Zach Merrick of All Time Low (He plays a JAZZ BASS with his FINGERS! How more non -conformist could you possibly get?)
2. Mike Dirnt of Green Day
3. David Desrosiers of Simple Plan
4. Mark Hoppus of Blink-182
5. Cone McCaslin of Sum 41

I saw ATL live in Bologne (with Simple Plan, Sum 41 & Blink 182).
He was amazing (with his black n white jazz bass), plus in a dvd/cd I bought there (Straight to DVD) he plays a very nice intro for "Poppin champagne".
David Desrosiers and Cone are cool too, but I don't like Sum 41' live sound.
Anyway, Mark Hoppus is the main reason why I play bass! :D

Dude, you're just like me. I wish i could have been there, that must have been an amazing show. And sum 41 is kinda trashy live, but they're songs and studio recordings are good. Same with blink 182, but at least they're funny on stage and have a lot of energy. I just like ATL shows because they go crazy (especially jack) yet they still manage to have a near-perfect sound.

Obviously I do like Sum 41 Recorded Stuff a lot and so for Blink 182 but @ the live I went Blink didn't suck at all, I swear I had goosebumps when they started I miss you, Travis could have only hit his snare I would have appreciated it the same but he rawked instead. Miss them, wish I graduated b4 but I couldn't so I won't be able to see them on Summer! :(
