KISS going micro???

JimmyM: it sure is good seeing your Godfather of Soul avatar again!

And I will say that I liked KISS when I was a youngster back in the 70's. I will even admit (hesitantly) that the band I was in at the time played at a Halloween party, and yep, you guessed it......we dressed up like KISS, and we played the entire KISS Alive album! :bassist:

Talk about mixed up "morals". Offensive? There was a time when being in a hotel with a hooker WAS offensive. I guess his superior bass playing gave him a pass. Allow me to roll MY eyes now. :rollno:

And the huge stage getup was for looks all along with KISS. But I'm sure they still go out of their way to put on a show, regardless of where you fall down on their musical abilities, they always give a ticket buyer their money's worth. (Or so I'm told..... never saw them.)

I saw them in 76. Awesome show that also had the bonus of Ace getting electrocuted and nearly killed. Again, not a Tommy Thayer or Eric Singer fan, but I still love KISS.

I always liked Ace's guitar solos. They had what I called back then a "rubbery" feeling. The guitarist in the band I was in at the time (1976 I think) nailed Ace's playing note for note. It was fun!

Uriah Heep opened for KISS when I saw them, and despite replacing the singer Dave Byron just before the tour, the audience loved them and wanted an encore, which of course KISS wouldn't allow. And I'll tell you, I have never seen opening bands get screwed on how much stage they get as I have seen at a KISS show. They got a tiny little section of the stage off to stage right and weren't even centered. They did, however, have great sound, and I've seen a lot of opening bands totally get screwed on sound, the worst of which was the Police. They absolutely sucked the life out of the opening act, which was a local punk rock band called Zenith Nadir. Not that they were such a great band, but the sound for them was absolutely dismal, and I know for a fact that the Police screwed them because they sounded awesome.

I saw one of the first shows of the 96 reunion tour in Albany NY. Deftones opened, and they were getting pelted with coins the whole time.

When they hit the first few notes of Detroit Rock City the arena went so crazy I could feel the upper deck where we were shake. I believe I counted 36 8/10 cabinets on stage. It was awesome.

I had spine surgery two weeks ago, and I set a goal that I would learn a song a day. Saturday's song..."God of Thunder".

My only KISS trivia. I believe I was at one of their first US performances, at the KSHE Kite Fly in St. Louis, I would guess around 72 or 73... can't remember for a lot of reasons (might have been a year or two later Edit: just looked it up, March 29th, 1974... 40,000 people). KISS had never played to more than 1000 people prior to that, and it was at the start of their first US tour. KSHE was the first station that played a KISS tune on the air in the US, so they came to support the station). They came out all dressed up. Crowd was around (edit) 40,000 or so (that was a BIG event back in the day). I can't remember who they opened for, but it didn't go particularly well.

I was within a few feet of the stage, and remembered with amusement that they were kind of 'cussing the audience' due to the bad reaction (I guess RUSH fans or pretty fanatic about Rush.... saw Journey boo'd off the stage opening for ELP back then too... same sort of thing). Anyway, so they walk down the stage steps cussing and grumbling, and their manager prompts them back on stage for an encore. 'THANK YOU ST. LOUS, WE LOVE YOU':p

To their credit, they played hard. I'll never forget that though... thinking 'what is this all about with the costumes'

Don't hear much about Uriah Heep. I was a big fan back in the early 70's, since I gigged as a keyboard player back then. That music hasn't held up well, IMO. As you are an Ampeg guy... a quick bit of Uriah Heep trivia. After Ken Hensley moved to the St. Louis area and become the Ampeg Artist Relations manager (he brought that brand back from the dead... amazing job), some of the Uriah Heep guys from back in the day would pass through town on occasion. I played a blues jam with Lee Kerslake, and he was just so awful. I was so bummed, since they were such a big deal for me when I was a kid.

That being said, I always thought Gery Thane (Thain... can't remember) was one of the most under-appreciated bassists of that era. While those old Heep tunes sound pretty silly and dated now (IMO), Gary's tone and lines and execution still sound great to me!
