Thinking I might try buying a kit build.Has anyone bought one and built their own before?If so where would be a good place to get one at a reasonable price?Not sure what style bass I'm looking to put together yet.Just redid a Squier affinity but I'd like to try starting something from bare bones and see how it goes.

I'm building a Pitbull kit now, the IB-6S. I just got the kit delivered last week and have started a build thread in the Luthiers Corner.
Carvin also sells kits in that range. I would have bought one instead of Pitbull except Carvin doesn't sell six-string kits.
Totally forgot about the Carvin kits, how would you describe the quality of your Pitbull kit?
I find the Ric clone on Pitbull to be more than a little tempting at $230.
That will be my next project after the six-stringer.
FYI, shipping from Pitbull is free within Australia, but was AU$60 to the US. The IB-6S cost me less than US$300 total, even with the extra shipping, and the kit arrived about a week after shipping from Perth, WA. There's a good forum for kit builders on the Pitbull site, with lots of tips and help available. That was the deciding factor in choosing their kit, even with the risk of getting a kit from the other side of the planet.
Didn't realize they were an Aussie company (no .au domain). Wish shipping was lower than 60, but it's still cheaper than a Chinabacker and almost looks like it's at my level of woodworking incompetence to slowly accomplish.
I might get the Ric style one. Wish it didn't have the J pickup but I've seen real Rics modded with J pickups.
If you buy a set of Rick pickups, you will have to cut routs that will eliminate the j-bass pickup rout anyway. I agree, that looks tempting. The hardware looks like junk, but for a couple hundred more you could probably cobble together a pretty nice bass.
It's a shame the Pitbull kits don't come with the Entwistle pickups as part of the kit.

Sorry, I missed this earlier. My Pitbull kit is nice. I'm not using, by design, the hardware and electronics it came with, but they are probably fine. The body is flawless, the spalt good enough, too. The neck is nice, and the fretboard has some glue spots. It also had shoddy frets that I removed today (I'm building a fretless.)
I'm sure a Carvin kit is much nicer, though.

Hadn't heard of this Co before; very impressed that they offer something beyond Vanilla Fendurrr P & J clownes – don't get me wrong: I like Fender P&J basses, I just don't want to build/assemble one.
I'm going to email PitBull and see if they'd consider a Hofner clone w/o the fugly rectangle control cavity route.
The hollow/semi-hollows look good, too, and Warmoth and Allparts etc don't sell hollowbodies. Might have to get the PitBull Fretless SC. Order up a TV Jones wiring harness, ThunderMag bridge and ThunderBlade neck pups. Some lightweight Hipshot Lollies to combat the inevitable neck dive... Maybe try to install a GraphTech Ghost piezo system ...
