Steve Harris clanks all over the place, I really do not think that he is the role model the OP is looking for.
How is your plucking hand technique OP? Are you hitting the strings downward when you pluck the strings.

I'm glad you posted this. I'm having the same issue. I'm using low tension strings (TI Jazz Flats) to prevent wrist/hand issues. I do not want higher tension strings. I'll try tweaking my technique.
