I'm about to make a start on a bass for a friend (& former bandmate) of mine. Over the last few weeks Dan & I have been going over all the details as well as drawing out full size plans & templates from his original sketches.

Here's the spec so far...

5 string, 35" scale, 24 frets
Korina body, with 1/2" Quilted Maple top
Plain Maple neck
Macassar Ebony fretboard
Black hardware: Hipshot bridge, Ultralite tuners
Pickup choice still isn't 100%, at the moment Dan's leaning towards a Nordstrand MM along with a Jazz at the bridge.

I got a nice big leaf quilted maple top off him as well. The couriers lost it for a week or so and gave me the run around. Andy refunded the shipping costs as soon as he heard about it, even though I told him it wasn't his fault. He followed up every day after that until I received it, superb customer service that's above and beyond what you would expect in this day and age.

Can't recomend him highly enough for anyone in the UK

Cant wait to see this one take shape - and get that 6er finished, its a looker, we wanna see how it sounds!

Totally agree - I keep checking his ebay shop for anything interesting he might get in. Cheers to Simo for recommending him!

He can do you custom cuts just as easily as standard, unlike the big sawmills - makes a big difference to us smalltimers without our own bandsaw :)

EDIT: Also, where did you get the korina?

I think there is a minimum order though, so you may need to combine with other stuff.

I know for a fact he ships to north america, could probably ship by surface to save on carbon.
Otherwise, can you get English timbers in the US?

Cheers :) although I'm trying to find thicker veneer for the body, 1.5mm - 2mm, they only list 0.6mm in the dyed veneer, I might shoot them an e-mail just in case though. I'm still waiting for a reply from marquetry.co.uk as they list it on there website... in the meantime any other suggestions are more than welcome.

Im going to get some 1.5mm english walnut for my next one. The sawcut veneers can be cut thicker... dont know whats the maximum thickness that can be dyed?

I just checked out his auction page and he only lists shipping to Europe I guess you would have to contact him directly if you wanted him to ship to the U.S.?

Ok...back to work, after getting hold of some veneer (thanks Alan) the body is starting to take shape.

Nice top! It looks like you cut maybe a good inch from each half along the join line, right? It's almost unusual to see a top without the contrasting center stripe that's popular now. Very nice. It puts the focus back on the body shape, rather than the wood figure.

...it's a nice machine but to be honest I'm looking forward to getting myself a decent hand plane, especially for more delicate jointing tasks like quilted Maple.
