Im not going to lie I'm only 15 years old and I have been playing bass for two years. He is the one bassist who inspired me to learn and play bass, and i suck. If it weren't for Krist I don't know what I would be doing as a hobby.

Kurt not a very good guitar player? rubbish,no1 was playing like him at the time,it was all hairmetal crap and endless widdling.
Obvioulsy playing is defined by some people by how clean and fast you can play your modes.
Yes it was simple as were the basslines but complex doesnt mean good so no IMO he would not of wrote better songs if he more "proper" technique,he would infact suck.

sometimes people are very talented but the music they make doesn't show off their true potential (Dave Grohl). But honestly I wouldn't call Nirvana talented, and I wouldn't say Cobain played or sang well, he didn't. What Nirvana excelled at was originallity. They completed what Guns N Roses couldn't.
I wasn't born in the 60's, so no, but I am a huge Dylan fan, and his technique suits his music. Kurt's playing did not suit Nirvana too well, or at least, IMHO, it could have been alot better, and made Nirvana sound better at the same time, keeping that trash, grunge feel just as much.
I think Kurt is WAY better at guitar than people give him credit for. If you listen to some of the guitar on the In Utero album, he played some things that no one would have ever thought of I don't think.
I never paid much attention to Nirvana's bass but in my opinion kurt cobain was quite substandard in both guitar and vocals =/
His first name really is Krist. He's named after his father. His parents emigrated to the US from Croatia.
First of all you can't compare Kurt Cobain to Jerry Cantrell (primary instrument was guitar), nor either of the guitar players of Pearl Jam...BECAUSE THEY WEREN'T THE LEAD SINGER OF A 3 PIECE BAND!!! Which also happened to be the biggest band in the world at the time.
Secondly, who cares what his technique was, he was an amazing songwriter. His guitar playing fit the music, hell he was their music. I hear the same things said about Roger Waters of Pink Floyd...but again, amazing songwriter and great frontman.
Krist was a perfect fit for their music. Loads of people tried to (and still do) emulate him.

and the fact that he comes from my country and is famous and i even don't know his name.
my 0.02:
he fit the role in nirvana perfectly, but if nirvana have had someone else as basist from start it would sound diferent, maybe better or worse, we can't tell. in case of better or same we would say "geee that guy perfectyl fits his role in nirvana" if it would sound worse we would not probably have this conversation right now.

I personally don't think you can compare anyone to Jerry Cantrell. I'm not a pearl jam fan but, the Mad Season album with the screaming trees guy, Layne Staley, and the pearl jam guitar player kicked ass. All that aside, Cobain WAS great, Krist Novoselic IS great, and Dave Grohl F'in rocks. So there!

Well you obviously haven't listen enough to some of the early works in Bleach, the one solo from "In Bloom" and all the guitar works in "Milk It" on In utero.
I've been playing an instrument since 14 years by now, and well some of these parts are just pure genius if you ask me.
Someone quoted the bass intro on "Lounge Act", you name one.
Listen to guitar work on "Milk It", sweet as it can be.
If you were speaking of what "technical squills" ?, I can play quite few solos ("parisian walkways", "Hotel california", half of the Metallica stuff), but I haven't figure out some of the Nirvana's one.
People who says he wasn't good blah blah are just snobs in my humb opinion . In a way stop arguing on it, take your axe and show what you can do.

Pretty sure Kurt himself said he wasn't a very good guitarist. He was, however, functional and creative, which is really the most important part of things when you're writing and performing your own music.
I think most people that disagree about his abilities in guitar are noting that because they feel he's quite overrated. Nirvana isn't a bad band at all, but Kurt isn't really all he's cracked up to be. He wasn't a good vocalist by far but overall, I would attribute Billy Corgan to be an overall better musician (it's a tie on vocals, both are bad IMO lol)
