I wasn't born in the 60's, so no, but I am a huge Dylan fan, and his technique suits his music. Kurt's playing did not suit Nirvana too well, or at least, IMHO, it could have been alot better, and made Nirvana sound better at the same time, keeping that trash, grunge feel just as much.
Krist is always overlooked, but he was a solid backbone for Nirvana. Between the super low slung bass, and his hip thrust dancing, he always looked just a tad ******** though.
I sometimes wonder if Justin Chancellor has taken dancing lessons from him..
I was listening to Heartshaped box last night and I was really shocked by how good/big he sounds and then later in the song during one of the choruses he sounded all fuzzed out it was awesome. does anyone else share some love for him or know what he uses for dirt?
sometimes people are very talented but the music they make doesn't show off their true potential (Dave Grohl). But honestly I wouldn't call Nirvana talented, and I wouldn't say Cobain played or sang well, he didn't. What Nirvana excelled at was originallity. They completed what Guns N Roses couldn't.
Yeah. I don't know how original they were, seeing as how they ripped off their sound from the Pixies (their own admission).
I'm not saying nirvana should have had dream theatre solos, but cobain's guitar playing still is awful. He could have played the very same things 10 times better if he had worked on his technique a bit more. Not only that but his guitar riffs are very simplistic, granted dream theatre solos wouldnt work, but he kepts his riffs at his own guitar playing level, when he could have IMHO done much better stuff.
Funny, I hear a lot of similarities in the two groups.ironically, niether bands sound anything alike![]()

Dave Grohl is under-rated singer btw

krist is a overlooked bass player if there ever was one. just look at the breakdown in stay away or the chorus in love buzz. hes a phenominal bass player who has influenced my playing tremendously and nirvana still remains my favourite band of all time.

What you are referring to is the fact that in several interviews Kurt said they were inspired by the Pixies sound and that in particular Smells Like Teen Spirit sounded Pixies influenced to him.
Fair enough, I hear some Pixies influence in their music. There are loud-quiet-loud dynamics and other song writing elements that they share,
but the end result sound produced is very different.
You're comparing Santiago's delicate clean guitar that veers into huge distorted bends that repeat the same note over and over to Kurt's fuzzy chugging power chords. Do you really think that either band's finished recordings could get mistaken for eachother?
Also, for all the folks who said Kurt was a no good guitar player, try to look at his whole body of music and not just the singles you heard on the radio. His playing was dirty because that was the style he wanted to use for that band, not because he didn't have chops. Here's what Rolling Stone had to say when they named him the 12th best guitar player of the rock era:

Kurt not a very good guitar player? rubbish,no1 was playing like him at the time,it was all hairmetal crap and endless widdling.
Obvioulsy playing is defined by some people by how clean and fast you can play your modes.
Yes it was simple as were the basslines but complex doesnt mean good so no IMO he would not of wrote better songs if he more "proper" technique,he would infact suck.
