People poo on scott and i think he's great and has done well for himself. His old videos are literally him one bass in a white room giving lessons. Now he runs an empire and is gearing out. Glad he found out the how awesome the kubicki is.

I quite enjoy the vast majority of SBL's videos, however, I've always been super curious about why Janek Gwizwalda doesn't seem to care for him anymore.
I have trouble hearing Phillip Mann. His accent trips me up and he talks too fast. It doesn't help that my hearing has turned to poo.
I'm a PayPal invoice away from ordering one. I've wanted a Kubicki since I played one in '87 or '88 and for one reason or another never ended up getting one. The ones I've seen in person for sale were kinda trashed and the Reverb prices were a little higher than I wanted to pay. But a brand new one? Sign me up. Hopefully will get the invoice on Monday. I kept flipping on the color choice. Was going to go yellow, then coral, ah, black is classic but boring. I think I've settled on white. It won't be out of place anywhere the Kubicki shape is not out of place.

I first saw a pic of an Ex-Factor in Tony Bacons book on basses, and was attracted to the tomato red colour the one pictured was. I was at a used gear joint in SF called Black Markers Music looking for a bass to use live, something I wouldn't worry about getting dinged or stollen. They had hundreds of guitars & basses and there was a Kubicki Ex-Factor in black. It was 'road-worn' with lots of player wear and after playing it I knew I wanted it. This was pre-internet ('93) and I found his Santa Barbara phone # and called to inquire about it. To my surprise Phil answered and was happy to 'fill' me in.
It would be hard not to be wowed by his creation if you weren't aware of it and Scott finally 'got' it!
Awsome! White is the most iconic color. Honestly the war torn players are the ExFactors I went for mostly in the past. I need a trench gun for the warfare I perform on stage without fear of dings and dents.
I know they started in 1985 which isn't exactly yesterday, but the Kubicki falls into the "modern" category in my head where relic on a P or J is cool, but I want pristine on the Kubicki. Weird, I know. I may go vintage white it I can so it's not over the top storm trooper-y.
Any Kubicki other than the FCS are boutique hand made basses to me.
Vintage or not they look great in pristine or road worn.

Blaster on the Bay (no affiliation) I know Phil wasn't happy with this connection, but is there a definitive explanation of the Blaster? Where made, any overlapping parts, different electronics? I know the hs extension shape was reversed... what else? Curious minds what to know!

Very nice - I'd personally go for that colour. That is the colour that was in the Tony Bacon book. I asked Phil about it and he said the colour was off in the printing. His coral is more salmon than red and his red is more red. That red almost looks like Fiesta red - more orange-tomato.
This being on a red background emphasizes it as more muted - Phil said it was a late '50s Desoto finish.

There are a few threads around but no definitive version that I've seen - all anyone really knows is Phil didn't like them. My understanding is that there were initial talks on a licensing deal, and prototypes built. The intention was to build an offshore, more affordable semi-mass produced bass. Quality may have been decent, but then Phil considered Fender custom shop level a bit corner cutting and sloppy! Obviously he wasn't going to be happy with anything but perfect, and the deal fell through. While the prototypes should have been destroyed the manufacturer may have made a few more and sold them... but there certainly aren't a lot around.
$1500 is a lot for a knock off, but they are rare, and the story makes them collectable I guess. Looks like they did a lot of stuff accurately, but I can never get over that headstock. It makes no sense to me that it would be that way up - the long string goes at the long end!

I agree - the same, but a distinctive difference. Really goes against Phil's complete design gestalt.
And what was the color choice after all?! Did you go white, the De Soto color, or go crazy with something else entirely?

I went with coral. My head says "white" but my heart wants "coral".
