Kubicki club?

Good to hear you found the problem. I've always used Duracell or Energizers in mine (force of habit I guess).

did have an electronics problem with my White Ex-Factor (#144). When in passive mode the thing barely made a sound, even with the volume at max. Last year the bass made its first trek back to Phil since it left his shop for some TLC. I wish I could remember the details but he did get the problem fixed without the need for a board replacement.

Here is a pic of my '88 X-Factorn (#1120). This has been my main bass for years and is very solid.

There are 3 on the bay right now. 1 Post Fender, 1 Fender and 1 unknown (seller doesn't say in the listing). Were 4 but the red Fender one just ended at approx $950.

2 of them have some pretty serious finish wear.

BTW I am not affiliated with any of these. I just have an auto search setup in my eternal quest for a mint\near mint original! :)

My new Koob appears to have a mysterious grounding issue. I didn't notice it until I was in recording with it. Nasty directional buzz (it goes away when I stand very still facing the right way). I hadn't noticed it before because with my wireless, it's not there, and with a ground-lifted DI, it's not there. Did it with every cable and preamp/amp configuration we tried, in different rooms. It's definitely the bass. But a tech found no loose wires in the well-shielded cavity...

I don't mean to derail the thread, but ... doesn't anyone happen to have a spare non-FCS Kubicki just lying around that they feel the need to trade? Maybe for a Spector NS5LX-EX? Maybe like the one in my avatar perhaps? :hiding:

I love the sellers comment on the Red one that just sold :)

On Aug-11-08 at 05:16:20 PDT, seller added the following information:

NO I WILL NOT SHIP TO FRANCE DUMBASS!! Read the auction and STOP ASKING!!

OK, I'm in, but keep in mind that I'm really not a photog. '89 X-Factor and a '90 FCS Fretless Factor. I, seriously, don't think I have GAS any more. :D

Just wanted to add that I just bought the White fretless FCS Factor and the yellow X-Factor that justBrian used to own. Need to sell the white fretless if anyone is interested. Great sounding bass but I'm only playing med/short scale basses.

I have the same issue with mine. It is as if they are single coils and there is little or no sheilding.
Do you get a weird sort of crackly sound when you touch the pre-amp selector? I do. It almost sounds like a sizzle type of sound. Same for the tone knobs.

I have the same problem you were having with volume as well. I changed batteries several times in the last few months with no improvement. I finally got sick of it and found this thread and saw that you got "good" batteries. (yes, I tried 7/11 ones as well at one point). I thought I was just getting batteries from a bad batch 3 or 4 times in a row. Well, I just went to Radio Shack and got the "best" 9 Volts they had for $12.98 each. It made no difference.

As for the volume, I have basses I can compare it with. I have a USA Spector NS-4 that is WAY loud. I have two Steinberger XM-2s which are both very loud but not quite as loud as the Spector. And until earlier this year before some douche stole it, I had a Steinberger XL-2 which was roughly the same volume wise as the XMs. I cannot directly compare because I got the XMs after the XL was stolen.

So, does anybody here have a Spector like mine or a Steinberger along with a Kubicki? If so, how do they compare volume wise?

Wow.. We must have gotten twin Kubis. Same exact issues. I don't have the crackle problem, but the hum and volume gremlins are there. My volume got a LITTLE better with new, better batteries, but my old G&L still crushed it volume-wise. I just figured I have to live with it - it's the price for having that tone. If I could bear to part with it even temporarily, I'd send it to Phil...

I had mine serviced already, the whole $400 service and Phil said the electronics were fine. So, I don't know what's up. I need to find another person in town with one so I can compare mine to it. I might send it back to him again but for what I have spent on batteries in the last several months, I already could have.:eyebrow:

Youch. Well, that's good to know, even if it doesn't help us solve the problems. It'd sure be good to get in a room with Phil and a handful of other Kubis and really hear the differences. Until then, I guess I just need to turn the amp up a bit and keep a ground lift handy.:crying:

I have a jazz plus 5 with a kubicki preamp and lace sensors, its does the same thing. depends on the location and quality of the ac current, but i get a directional hum (dissappears perpendicular to my amp) and faint crackling when i touch a knob.

as a side note, my bridge lace sensor is microphonic (needs to be repotted, all components are loose) and i thought that was the problem. maybe its the pre?

also, a 9 volt lasts me YEARS before needing replacement, are the fender kubicki preamps known for that? or is it a fluke?

I dunno.. I've never played a FCS Kubi (or any one other than my own, for that matter) I don't use the active settings when I'm just practicing, so I have no clue as to how long the batteries should last. They say months and months, but when the volume is so weak to begin with... I dunno..
