Kubicki EX Factor

When I was in that predicament, I eventually just bought one, content that I'd get most of it back if I didn't one-hundred-percent love it. Turns out I loved it. The D-extension on the E-string is worth the price of admission alone, even before you notice the super-boomy-yet-somehow-also-highly-articulate electronics. I don't have any now because I got off medium scales for a while, during which while the brand became financial unobtanium.

About 3,000 miles too far to demo, but if this one grabs you…

I just checked in with the company to get info/quote on a build and they are reporting a 16-month lead time. $5800 plus tax and shipping for a solid color finish. Unfortunately, at this point I just can't justify $6k+ dollars and a year and a half wait for one. I'd have to sell my original L-2 AND the Roscoe LG-3005 ... and get a time machine to whittle the wait down to 4-6 months or so. Oh well, what can you do?

Wow! That's a lot (in both ways).

I have to say, though I am privileged to own a Kubicki (and have owned a couple more previously)--and adore them--I wouldn't swap my L2 (Steinberger) for one, even in a straight trade (they too are fantastic instruments that aren't easy to come by either). Better to be patient and pick up a Factor on the used market. They hold up well if taken care of and most would have been made by Mr. Kubicki himself.

Ja, although the Roscoe is currently up on the block, my old L-2 isn't going anywhere. It's funny, back in 1986 or maybe early '87 I first played an Ex Factor at Friendly River Music in Portland. At the time I had an XL-2A that I had custom ordered in white and waited several months to received from Ned & co. When I played the Kubicki, I had some fleeting misgivings about my purchase. Should I have waited and got myself a Factor instead? The Steinberger bass was already fading from favor in the zeitgeist, and I admit that I started to miss the body-to-body interplay when I had it strapped on ... a feeling instantly rectified by the near-perfect ergonomics of the curves and contours in Phil's design.

I'll just keep looking I suppose, though I missed out on one for under $4k that was up on the 'bay just recently ... gotta sell that Roscoe first before justifying another purchase!
