La Bella Deep Talkin': Best. Strings. Ever.

So far, I've seen 3 recommendations for light gauge and 3 recommendations for medium gauge in this thread.

Two questions:

How do the Jamersons compare to the Deep Talkin' Flats?

Which Gauge?

760FX Deep Talkin’ Flats Extra Light Gauge 039 056 077 096
760FL Deep Talkin’ Flats Light Gauge 043, 060, 082, 104
760FM Deep Talkin’ Flats Medium Gauge 049 069 089 109
0760M Jamerson Flats Medium Gauge 52, 73, 95, 110

Thanks! :)

Don't forget the 760FS set, 45-105. An excellent choice--very much like the very popular 760FL set, but the G on the FS set is darker.

>> Jazzdogg - LaBella also makes Deep Talkin 760FS (Standard Guage .045 .065 .085 .105). I would recommend the Medium Guage for a short scale bass, and the Standard Guage for a 34" scale. Some guys like the Light Guage for a little less tension.

I'd say go with the ones closest to what you are already used to if you play rounds. I was playing standard gauge ( .045, .065, .085, .105) for almost 20 years and the 760 FS is the set that feels right to me.

This is the second time I've emailed Carvin. They are definite on this. Here is my email to them. And their response.

LaBella makes both

Thanks,

These strings made my new P sound just so amazing. I can't imagine it being any better.

AND - while LaBella may make the strings for Carvin, they may not be made exactly the same way as LaBella's own. In fact, LaBella may insist that they be made to different specs than their own products. Just be aware. It would be interesting to have a real comparison.

I've contacted LaBella to see what they say. If anything.Worth a stab. I've also contacted Elderly on getting the 5 string sets of "Deep Talkin' Bass" Flats. I've given him the info and he'll check with his supplier and get back with a price.

Here's what I got back from Elderly:

The purchaser wrote me: "760FM plus 760F-128 makes the 5 string set. Single strings are not in stock, are on order."

I just put a set of mediums on my Carvin fretless 5 (from just strings, didn't want to wait for Elderly to get the singles in) and at first I wasn't sure if it was worth it, there wasn't that difference from the Chromes, but on second play, decided that they were far better. I switched from the chromes because they seemed just a bit too light for me - the tone wasn't big and deep enough for what I was looking for (esp. the B and E) but the la bellas are noticably heftier and have a bigger tone. I still have chromes on my pbass but may end up changing.
