La Bella Nylon Tape wound question/problem

I realize that this info may be already out there, but I was hoping for specific advice.

I just bought a set of La Bella 760N black nylon tape wound strings, as well as a set of D'addario Chrome ECB81 flatwounds.

My bass is a standard p-bass with a 34" standard scale.

The issue I'm having with both sets of strings is that the low E is slightly too long, and I'm concerned that winding the string will cause it to break more easily.

The La Bella's have this warning on the back:
Wind only the silk end portion of the string into the machine head post. If you wind the metal wound portion of the string into the machine head post, the string will almost certainly break.

what should I do?

The Cromes look like you're safely on the silk, and with the La Bella's you're right on the brink. I think they will both be alright, I've wound more sets in my lifetime than I can possibly count, and never broke a string.

I agree about the chromes, although the metal wound portion is under the silk at that spot. And it turns out that my nut isn't wide enough to fit the La Bella behemoth of a E string anyways (.115!)

Maybe I'll take those back and try some other stuff out

I use the LaBella tape wounds and love 'em. BUT you have to get them in the right lenght for your bass. If you have the option to string thru the body it might solve your problem if not you should see if you can exchange them for a slightly shorter set. Another important thing to note on the tapewounds is they are in fact HUGE and will most likely requrie you to enlarge the grooves on your nut in order to work properly. All that said, they do sound great, feel fantastic, last forever and give the perfect blend of roundwound and flatwound sound. Also great on a fretless bass and an acoustic bass. I like the LaBella tapewounds much more than the Rotosound tapewounds. They had a very rubber band "boing" type sound to them that I didn't care for.

I've wound my fair share of unwrapped string portion around the tuning post with no problems. But, as good sounding as the LaBella DTB nylon taps are (talking 760N here), I bought a set despite some warnings that the wrap is inconsistent and I found the very same thing. The D string had a horribly uneven/unsmooth wrap that caught my fingers. Love me some LaBella DTB flats, but not the nylons. Give the Chromes a try, but the shorter set is too short (silks past the nut - I know; I've tried).

I put on the Chromes this morning and they seem fine, I like them quite a bit actually. Still have yet to try it through an amp, but I think they aren't going to break at least.

Just keep in mind that the Chromes will sound quite a bit different today than they will in a few weeks or a few months. It takes them a while to warm up, as it were. They start out fairly bright for flats.
