Labella Jamerson 0760M: Review and Comparison

I used to use the Jamersons for ages, but when I gave my bass to a shop to set up, I get a phone call asking what brand of strings I used on the bass. I told them LaBellas. They replaced it with the medium gauge. :hmm:

I just said f- it and I just ordered a new set for my P-Bass.

So much for swearing off LaBella for lousy CS huh?

What did they do with the old strings?

I would have killed them if they changed them out without asking...

What problems did you have with their customer service?

I use LaBella tapewounds on my 75 RI Jazz bass. At $45 a set, they're pricey strings, and I had a defective A string. By defective I mean that there was rough spots on the black nylon and it was worn through the metal in some places. A very uncomfortable string to play, and it sounded like junk to boot.

So I called LaBella at the number at their site. No answer. This was before 5pm and it was on a weekday.

Emailed them the next day telling them about the screwed up A string and asked for a replacement A. They then asked me for a return address to ship me a replacement. OK, so far so good.

Two weeks go by. Nothing. No follow up email and no strings. I call them up again, no answer. I do this for a few days throughout the week, and sent them another email. No response to any of it.

Finally I said F- it, and emailed them saying that I wouldn't bother buying their product due to lousy CS and QC, and they had just lost a loyal customer. (I used to use LaBella's on all my guitars and basses)

Now on the flipside I bought a set of GHS flats, and they were sticky. Emailed them about it, and got a prompt response the next day. Three days later, I got new strings in the mail.:)

Okay, this is annoying. Now I'm getting conflicting reports about WHICH strings are the "Jamerson" strings. Can we get a consensus here? The big strings which I ordered speak of the "ORIGINAL" gauge right on the package, so it made sense that those were the ones. Now there are a few people who don't think that's right... I don't get it...

The Jamerson set is called 0760M, not to be confused with the Deep Talkin' Flat set which is 760FM.

The Jamerson Gauges are 52-73-95-110. They don't say Jamerson on the pack but they say "1954 Original Oldie" on a blue and red stamp on the pack.

The DT Heavy Gauge is 49-69-89-109

So those are the gauges, if the pack of strings you have list anything other than 52-73-95-110, you don't have the Jamerson set.

Okay.

Forgive me for being distrustful, but How Can You Be Sure?

Lots of claims, no proofs yet, at least 3 sets have been identified as "The Jamersons"...

From the LaBella Catalogue

Flat Wound “Jamerson Set”
The 0760M set was used by the legendary James Jamerson on
virtually every Motown hit record in the Sixties. Donald "Duck"
Dunn used the same strings on countless recordings with Otis
Redding and Booker T. & the MG's. They are the fullest and
deepest sounding bass strings ever.
Set 0760M Medium
.052 - G .073 - D .095 - A .110 - E

Thanks for the info. I love the 760FLs, and have a set on my PRS and on a Jazz.

It's a bit strange; I'm going to contact LaBella about them. The packaging is correct, but I don't have a set of calipers.

I gave away a set of blue silked Jamersons a few years ago, (before I owned multiple P basses), but now I really want a serious thumper in my arsenal and I'm digging these, whatever they are.
