LaBella/RotoJazz flats?

ok so(i'm into the `thump' thud' classic rock, honky-tonk,southern rock,blues,,,garage band,heck Jimmie Hendrix stopped by one thursday!,at least that's what the neighbor asked me) so i've had a GREAT time with a set of Chromes,,,i love them!,,but i'm thinking i'll buy another set of`flats' and keep the experiment going(and give myself an xtra christmas present),so what'll it be for my Matsumoko P with the super addictive low action neck(had to throw that in)?,,Deep Talkin' flats or Steve Harris/Jazz roto's?

or=what's the dif?,,looking to step up to 50/110's (at least) from the 45/100 Chromes,possibly explore drop tuning?,,,this neck can handle it

From what I've heard (no firsthand experience), the LaBella's will take you straight to Motown a.k.a. Thumpville. The Rotosound flatwounds, I've heard, will give you that Steve Harris clanky flat sound, not so much thump.

that's about right. out of the box they all sound like rounds, but labellas mellow out and thump real quick while the rotos stay ringy for quite a while. not as long as ti jazz flats, but for a while.

if it were me, i'd stick with the chromes. they're a really good tweener string...thumpier than rotos or ti's, ringier than labellas or fenders.

These are the only 2 flat brand I have ever used so hopefully this will be of some help:-

I bought the 77's out of curiosity about flats, as I was an exclusive swingbass user at the time so it made sense!. Hated them right out the box, hated them when they started mellowing and still hate them now. Sticky, brittle and harsh sounding. Saying they they are still on one of my P's in a futile attempt to one day like them!.

I thought as I was so dissappointed in the roto flats I would go right to "the top", ie the la bellas, and they are AWESOME!!!. Smooth, deep, thumpy....in short, perfect. And they really do get better with age, do it...you'll know when you start playing them

interesting,i just reshimmed my Jazzburst neck last night=wow!,i'm stoked about THAT axe again after considering selling her,,, SO NOW!,,i may be looking for some new/exciting strings for that=?

and now that i'm scared of the ROTOs i guess i'll shop up a set of LaBellas,,although i was looking around the net after i made the post and the Rotos have more options sizewise i'm tonally happy with the P,,i'm going to re-focus on the J today with some dead roundwounds,,,reintonate/tune,check for buzzy frets,get over my hangover:scowl:thinking a black pickguard,roll the neck edge a wee bit

so since i enjoyed the Chromes originally on my J before transfering to my P the La Bellas/J would be a step up from the Chromes? wish the local GC had a Harris P in stock! of course i may get into trouble there(and love it)

I liked the sound of the Roto 77's but the tension is VERY high. All in all they seem to me alot like the Chromes, but I never broke either one in.

LaBellas, I have tried FM, FS and FL and like them all. The FL's have the best highs and lowest tension. The FS are great thumpers with medium tension and a big sound. I play the same kind of music you do. The FM's are too tense for me.

I don't love Jazz basses with thumpy flats, I need the highs or I feel I am taking away something from the sound of the bass.
