About 20 years ago I developed a sudden allergy to shrimp, and it caused hives all over my skin whenever I ate it (which wasn't very often to begin with). A normal dose of chlorpheniramine maleate (Chlortrimeton) would clear it up.
But after three or four occurrences over several years, the reactions went away and I've never experienced them again since. Maybe it was something in the shrimp's diet or something they had absorbed from the water but not the shrimp themselves.
