Laguna burger build

I thinned out the upper horn a tiny bit and shortened it a little.

I'm not scared.

I think that's what was off about it.
In my head and in the drawings, it was a bit slimmer in the horns and bellies.
But I never actually removed that much material after cutting the body out.
Plus, I think this body might end up being a tiny bit heavier than the original and I didn't route any cavities in the upper half. So it could probably stand to lose a few oz.

How's it feel on your lap or on a strap? That would be more important to me than how it looks.
Agree 100%
This was born from boredom and a hope that it would inspire me to both start building and start playing again. So, I kinda started out with just picking a body style that I liked more than the original. As it stands, it sits on my knee just fine. About the same as before. But the upper horn is still a bit annoying in the chest area. It's much better since rounding the edges and probably better yet, if I take a little more off. I probably won't play standing up, so not a major concern. It was originally a 9 lb bass and I'm guessing it will be right around 9 lbs again. Future scratch built basses (for me) will be designed around comfort 1st and looks 2nd
Also thinking of bringing future builds down to a Ric scale and bring the nut a little closer and frets a hair closer together. This bass is 34", 24 fret.

My only advice is to look at it in more of a horizontal "playing" position. Keep in mind that sitting on a stand isn't the way it'll be seen.
Wait,...I have to actually play this stupid thing?
I thought it was like the guys with $30k harelys that just shine the chrome in the driveway every day so everyone can see and then wheel it back in the garage every night.

Don't forget that the Harley guys fire it up to annoy the neighbors! You need to do that too.
Of course you don't need to wear a silly leather jacket to do it though. Optional.

If the neighbors seem like they are getting to used to the Harley, I bring home the racecar -

Did I mention tomorrow is race day? :roflmao:  :roflmao:

I vote for pic number 2 on the last page. Knee cut a touch more and the treble cutaway being deepened.

I think shortening the upper horn is wrong, foolish, stupid, ignorant and possibly even criminal. I've chosen to use light gentle wording here instead of how I really feel. :smug:

Seriousment though... a longer upper horn reduces the feel of the reach to the nut. This may be a non-issue depending on how yuge you are, but I really, really like it when the horn reaches to the 10th fret. The comfort increases a lot for my personal ergonomics (blueberry shaped).

I was actually thinking about that movie the other day and was gonna ask I it's a huge hit with the racing community.
Whether you race or not, that movie is funny AF.
Well, TBH, most of the "NASCAR" community hates that movie, because it totally prortrays NASCAR as a bunch of idiots. Me, I don't care. Nobody ever mistook me for Jeff Gordon. I have held a NASCAR license in the past, but I don't right now.

BTW, my name is Ron and I'm fine with everyone knowing that and calling me that. I don't have a secret identity (maybe a touch of multiple personality disorder, but none of them are a secret). Richter is my last name and I just picked a username because all the other kids were doing it.
I mean, mine's fairly easy to decipher if you watch my "stuff". The "Terrible Tim" part started as a joke and became a brand with the race car, so I just go with it. The 68 is....yup....the car number. ;)

However, the car in the trailer that day was not the one above, it was this.....

We stopped racing the red car because it's too dang expensive and I'm broke AF right now. So we built the Gremlin out of left-over obsolete parts because it's way cheaper to operate. I mean, until you start blowing things up!

Anyways, back to bass building stuff! Sorry for the derail! SQUIRREL!!!

Yeah, if you're bigly then a larger body looks normal. My granddaughter made this for my wife on Mother's Day -

Apparently my wife would not look proportionate with a larger bass. :roflmao:  :roflmao:

Fixed. Nice to meet you Ron. For the record I'm Ken. There's a guy named Kenneth that tells me everything I do is wrong. There was also Kenny but you all killed Kenny you b@$+@rd$!

I'm an odd bird. I know, a little surprising, but true.
From the waste down I have the body of someone who's 5'8".
From the waste up I have the body of someone who's 6'.
So, I'm 5'10" with short legs and long arms. Even back when I was skinny, I had to wear a size large shirt for the arm length.
Anyway, reach isn't an issue, but I was concerned about the body being a little too heavy and the horn too long, possibly causing the neck to wanna rise. But, I'm not in a band and I will likely just jam along with songs I like while sitting.
However,.....what I could do is wait on the finish, strap it up as is, try it out. I can always take more off the horn if it's sitting weird.

Fine. I'll post obligatory bass stuff so we're covered till tomorrow.
I did this today.
.010 aluminum flashing. 5 min epoxy (1 hour cure). Theory is that it will stabilize the wood so I can thin it down and also serve as shielding.
I have a 14"x 50' roll if anyone wants a piece.
