Just a quick update:
I haven't touched the bass since I packed it up and brought all my stuff home from work (2 wks ago?).
I promise I'm not a bad person. I've been busting my hump to get the basement cleaned up, build some quick-n-dirty benches, shelves, etc. But, you have to move 10 things to move 10 things and build 10 things to build 10 things, and so on and so on.
Anyway, it's still in pretty rough shape, but I'm finally in a spot with material that I can set up everything I need. I forgot I had 2 large old floor-ceiling bathroom cabinets in the garage. Going to cut off the tops and use the bottom sections with drawers as the base for the 2nd bench. Basically the tool storage and staging/overflow kinda bench. I bought a piece of 3/4 melamine today. Going to use 28" of it for the bench and 20" of it for a shallow 8' counter on the outside wall, with a small 14"x 16" RV sink that I had. The main bench is 8'x 3' and just a 3/4 particle board top. I'm doing a lot of -cheap as possible- and repurposed stuff on this because I'm leaving it all when we move.
I have a large vice in the garage, but it's a bit much, so I'll grab a small one from HF for little stuff and make a wooden vice. And a small 2x4 piece of peg board for chisels, handsaws, etc and I should be good.
About to get back at it and hopefully by tomorrow night I'll have a pic of the bass on the bench. I have all next week off work and it will be nice to be done with all this grunt work and be back to the bass.

Yeah, soooo,.... The strap came off the hand cart and one of the drawer bases rolled down the basement stairs.
They're typical stapled together particle board with hardwood face cabinets. And they were made in the 90s and sat in my damp garage for 5 yrs. So yeah, it fell apart. I managed to get it back together, but I'll be honest,.... I almost cried.
Tomorrow it's build the wet ba.....hand/paint brush washing station and put all the tools in their home. I also need to mount the little TV somewhere out of the way. It's playoff hockey season.
Oh yeah,....I'm only at about $120 in lumber for the work area. 2 bench tops and about $60 worth of 2x3s.
If you count my labor and wear/tear on my lower back,....about $1.2 mil.

Everything is built, TV is on the outside wall (because it's important for someone who can't focus, to have a TV in the work area). I didn't start cleaning up and organizing yet, starting that now. Also, I'm running on extension cords from the service outlet on the panel, so I'm gonna go ahead and install some permanent outlets on a dedicated line. Then I'll start the cleanup.
As for the TV, it was just a cheap 23" LED I had from when our TV took a crap and it was the fill-in until we bought a new one. I don't really watch TV while I'm working, but it's hockey playoff time and I really don't wanna miss the games. I probably won't leave it up because it will get covered in router dust and who knows what else.
Also, for recording, the Focusrite Scarlett was recommended and reviews say it's a great unit. But Sweetwater has a Behringer unit on sale for $50 and I think that will work just fine. It will be my pops day present to myself.

I use one of those Behringers. If you boost the gain too high you get noise, and the headphone amp is nothing special. But mines been kicking for years without issue and sounds good enough for me.

Anyone around you doing powder coating? That's probably the only durable finish you can use.

You could powder coat, but they sandblast first.

Check to see if they can do it over chrome. You might need to have it unplated.

I just put on a few coats of black rustoleum epoxy rattle can.
This bass was donated to science to see if I could cut it as a builder.
When it's done, it will be a beater/player, so I'm not worried about long term wear on hardware finish. I can always get new hardware and try different pups too.
On future builds, I'll make sure the hardware is what I want out of the box. Painting or powder coating hardware is not something I plan on being a regular thing or even an option in the future.

Good to know, thanks. I used to have a Behringer bass rig. It seemed like a decent enough brand (I'm sure it's made in the same factory as 12 other brands anyway). I really just want something to record simple sound clips, to see what the bass sounds like. If it can do that decently, I'll be happy.
I guess it comes with its own DAW too, so that's pretty cool.

I've never used the DAW. I use Audacity because I'm blind as a bat and it's simple with big buttons.

Yes, audacity was recommended as a free program for a windows machine.
I'll try both and go with whichever is more idiot proof.

So, I just need to say that it is absolutely killing me that the bass is still all wrapped up and in a corner. I even tried hiding it in a corner, behind some other stuff, so I won't see it or think about it. But it's eating away at me and I'm dying to clear everything off my unfinished bench and go at it. But I need to stay strong and get through finishing the work area first. I realized how much stuff I have and how scattered everything is recently. The problem is that we never planned on being here long, so I never really settled in. But having everything centralized and organized will make it much easier to work on the house (and the bass...and 15 other projects) and will actually make it much easier to move later on, than having everything scattered in boxes everywhere. I've managed to throw away a lot of junk too. So, I need to stay the course.
I installed I new breaker panel in a better location and need to transition everything over in the house and then put in a new meter box on the outside, then have the pwr company come and switch service over to the new panel. So, it's a bit of a dance to manage it all in an active home. For now, I have actual outlets installed for the basement and ditched the ext cords. The pics don't look much different than last time, but a lot of movement and organization has been going on. Also, I noticed the the small dehumidifier has a pretty easy time of keeping it at 50% down there, so that's good news. I have the rest of the weekend and most of next week to finish up the basement. I'm hoping to have a pic or 2 of the space mostly done and the bass actually sitting on the bench by wed. I still need shelving in the corner where the garbage can is and I'm going today to pick up another $40 in lumber to make more storage on the other side for all my stuff for working on the house.

I mean,.... Aside from not having a big pin router, it's basically Bruce's shop.

I'll finish up and snap a pic when I have everything put away (I swear my house is haunted and every time I put a box of stuff away, I find 2 more in it's place!), Then I'll put the bass away again and poly the top of the bench. We'll be in PA until sat for a wedding and the bench should be nice and dry by then.
Then, it's back at it!

Ok, I still have a lot of little odds-n-ends to tidy up, but the mini shop is basically set up and I managed to organize 90% of all my supplies for working on the house, on the other side of the shop.
I just finished and have to hit the hay. My wife wants to leave by the ungodly hour of 10am . I didn't poly the bench, but I'm using water based, so I'll do it Sunday night, leave the dehumidifier on and it should be good by Monday after work.
Oh, I didn't unwrap the bass, but I just said I would have a pic of the bass on the bench, so technically I'm clear. And it's before midnight, so I made my Wed deadline too.

A forgot I took a pic of the space before I cleared it out and set it up. It was the last corner of the basement that still had a ton of junk left in it but was the only corner available to set up. The pic is after I already busted up and removed the old concrete double stationary sink, old boiler and started moving stuff.
The other pics are the best I could do to get a glimpse of where I'm workin. It's hard to get it all in the pic because the space is small (12x12). I have 2 old pieces of oak plywood with cork glued to them. I was gonna sacrifice one as a place to tack up notes and drawings, then realized,.... I have the ductwork I can stick notes to with magnets! So I can save my oak plywood which I'm guessing is valued somewhere around $4000.
