I'm also the proud owner of a Lakland 55-01. Black and maple neck, upgrade witha John East U-Retro DeLuxe.

The U-Retro really opens up the tonal options on this bass, a big improvement over the stock preamp, it sounds awesome!

I'm thinking of upgrading the pickups to Nordstrand Big Singles or Dual Coil...
Since I haven't had the chance to listen to Nordstrand pickups, I was wondering if there is any chance that any of you guys already using any of these pickups could post some sound samples.

Classy looking bass you got there!

Do you feel like the U-Retro colors the sound at all? Do you like the sound of the pickups themselves?

I'm not happy with the Bart MK-1 preamp and am looking for something else. I've been thinking about an Audere Classic 4-Band because of the lower price, plus I'm just not sure how much I would use either the High-Z or Low-Z mode on the more expensive Audere 3ZB. I'm mainly after the active blend and better overall sound.

It's okay. I'm actually okay with the sound of the pickups in passive mode (I think) so I might just go with an Audere Classic 4-Band. I've listened to the sound clips on the Audere website and I'm not all that impressed with the sound differences of the different Z-Modes. I'm really just interested in the DC coupling and the active blending.

The Z mode difference are subtle and probably hard to hear in a recording, but when you're playing the bass you can hear a big difference.

You may want to view the Audere demo on bass player TV...

Well, in my opinion yes, the Retro does colour the sound a little bit but in a good way and brings the bass up to life.
Listen to this clip from Ed Friedland's site, that's his '74 Jazz bass with a J-Retro and you'll get the idea:

It was the Norstrand Big Splits and Big Singles that Brian at Bestbassgear.com said had a muscular jazz bass tone.

Been a while since I listened to his clips, but IIRC-and I might not-he recorded a lot of that set flat.
If that's true, roll some bass in at the axe.

I'll have mine back ~ mid-next week.
DC5's, LH3 preamp, dual mini-switches for single/parallel/series for each pup.

I'm not sound clip ready, but I have two Big Single rigs to contrast.

I will tell you all this about the Big Singles. Even if you run the passive with no preamp at all they're much better tonally and have much more output than the stock MK-1's. I used to have the MK-1's in my bass with a Bart NTMB and would run out of headroom at high levels. My bass would get muddy and distort, especially doing outdoor gigs. I stuck the Big Singles in there and that problem went away immediately. I also added an extra battery to my preamp making it an 18v set up but even at 9v you should notice a big difference. They're just an all around good pickup. They're not as bright as a single coil jazz pup but they're still better IMO.

IMO, if you want an overall good sounding bass and a greatly improved tone then I'd go with both the pre and pup switch. I had my 55-01 and thought I had an MK-1 preamp in there when I went to get the Nordies installed but when we opened up the back there was an NTMB sitting in it already. So why did I want to change my tone if I already had an NTMB? It was the pickups. I would get distortion when I played at high levels but once I stuck the Big Singles in there that went away.

I want to replace both the pups and the preamp, but I can't afford to do both at the same time. I'm just trying to decide what to do first. I also need to get a better amp, so it's hard to decide whether I like the passive sound of the stock pups. I'm hitting up Guitar Center tomorrow and I'll be able to play through some quality amps. I'll probably replace the pre first to get more tonal options out of the MK-1's, though.
