I'll put this up against whatever you got.
The three way coil taps give you an entire plethora-yep!-of great tones, and the LH3 preamp is beautifully quiet, and usable all the way thru it's sweeps. As an extra added bonus, the move to lighter knobs shaved nearly a full pound, she now scales in at...8.02!!!!

Gig report:
1) Lakland did a great job on setup. I hadda raise the action about a full turn on each saddle to get it right for my double bass biased right hand technique.
2) A Berg NV215 is a good thing. The low end comes out beautifully solid and articulate, and feels like a kickdrum to the chest. The top end is smmoooooth.
Now, the good stuff:
This combination really works well!
The series mode is thick, with a little top end knocked off as you'd expect. This setting gives you a nice P like neck sound.
Parallel is brighter, and only gives up a little low end.
Single coil is bright and snappy...while a little thinner in nature, it's easy enough to dial some beef back in with the LH3 preamp.
I found myself mostly running one pickup in Series, and the other in Single coil. This gives you a great combination of beef and clarity. Roll just a touch of treble in, and set the pickup blend a little off center to either neck or bridge-depending what you need at the time. Beautiful.
Tho I'm mostly a pure fingerstyle guy, if slappy is your thing, go all single coil, roll some mids out, and some lows and highs in and you're there. This worked exceptionally well for copping Flea's tone for "Higher Ground."
I'm gonna have a hard time grabbing anything but this bass for quite a while I think!

I may just have to do this with my 55-01. I'm going to be installing an Audere 3ZB with mid frequency switch sometime this summer. Later on I could install a set of those dual coil pups with the three-way switches like you did. Parallel/single/series on each pickup, mid frequency control, and Z-mode switch? Crazy!

hey I just bought a 44-01 last night from a local seller...mint condition.
rosewood neck. she's a beaut. $485 ..bargain.
I'm going to adjust the action today because it feels way too high for me, but the reason I post is to look for advice on strings.
the ones on there at the moment just don't feel right..maybe it's because of the high action, but I'm looking for advice on what suits the 44-01
I'm not much of a string guy, but I generally like light gauge
what strings do you prefer?

What kind of music do you play? Do you do any slapping? Do you like to bend notes?
There's much to factor in when buying strings. As far as my $.02, I usually use Sadowsky Stainless Steel round wounds. They're perfect for what I do and they're hex core which makes them a little tighter than a round core string would be. DR High Beams are nice too.

I think that's what's on both my JO5, and 5501. They sound very nice, solid but not boomy fundamental, nice clean highs.
The have a grey wrap at the tuner end, and taper at both ends on at least the B, and maybe the E...sound right?
