I replaced the pickups first and it made a big difference. Then when I replaced the pre with an Audere it really made it an amazing sounding bass. I just got home from a gig playing it. :bassist: It killed.....

I don't know which is best to replace first, since I only did it one way, but I was happy with my choice of pickups first. I have heard others say that they were happy replacing the preamp and leaving the pickups. I'm sorry I'm not helping any.....:D

It's totally fine! I think my experience at GC today will clear things up for me. If I'm okay with the MK-1 passive sound I'll replace the preamp first - if not, then it's the pups first. I've been playing with the EQ flat since I bought it 'cause I don't like the tonal effect of changing the EQ at all.

I've been debating whether to get an Audere Classic 4-band preamp or a 3ZB for my 55-01. I'd rather have the Z-mode switch and three-way mid frequency switch available on the 3ZB but I'm concerned about drilling holes in the front of my bass for the switches. I know I can get the 3ZB with stack knobs, but I want to keep the knobs all singles.

Have any of you drilled holes in your 01? How did you do it without extra damage or cracking the finish?

This is a picture of my old 55-01 with Audere 4-band. You can see where I had two holes drilled -- one for the Z-Mode swtich and one for the LED.

I thought it looked great. (I did have it professionally installed, tho.)

I forgot to mention something. I went to Guitar Center this past Monday to see how my 55-01 sounded on a good amp - mainly to see if I liked the sound of the MK-1 pups. I plugged into a Mark Bass 210 combo with the EQ flat and left the EQ on the bass flat as well. Sounds pretty good! I then tried a Geddy Lee Jazz with the same amp settings and found the sound thinner than the 55-01 - BUT...

Roll the bass back ever so slightly and they sound almost the same to my ears - at least in the same ball park!

I'm impressed! I might not get the USA Barts after all!

I'll put this up against whatever you got.
The three way coil taps give you an entire plethora-yep!-of great tones, and the LH3 preamp is beautifully quiet, and usable all the way thru it's sweeps. As an extra added bonus, the move to lighter knobs shaved nearly a full pound, she now scales in at...8.02!!!!
