Thanks supertanker =) I've always wanted to join this club since i absolutely love this bass. Before me and my baby got together I've searched the entire web for worthy bases (since this would be a one time deal because its not that often that my cousin would go home from the US and shipping rates+tax is as high as my appreciation for this bass) but i still ended up with the best there is for the buck. I am currently on stocks right now but i'm saving to upgrade to a Nordy Fatstack\Obp-3 combo. Could Someone comment on my chosen configuration? WHat's the difference between a fatstack/big split/big single? How about obp3 vs lh3 vs audere? I really want a deep sound like the Tobias clasic(Terrence Palmer sound) and kinda jazzy marcus miller sound. Which combination would give me these in sounds in one monster 5501? Sorry guys i've really wanted to ask some questions hehe =)

I don't know about the OBP-3 'cause I've never played through one. I've heard that they're a bit touchy in that a little EQ knob turn goes a long way. Me, I'm going to install an Audere 3ZB preamp and Norstrand Dual Coil pups. I plan on having a 3-band EQ with mid frequency switch and installing separate parallel/single coil/series switches for each of the Dual Coil pups, like Chef did. I figure there's nothing you couldn't play with that electronics setup!
-- That's a wicked set up man. I also wanted a dual coil at first. But then i really wanted a sound that is somewhere in the middle... dead middle... So i figured that the fatstack would do the job since could be in a single coil configuration and humbucking configuration right?

I wonder if anyone has tried an Ibanez SR 500 or 900 series. I owned a SR905 and it was factory set with the same Bartolini MK-1 set of pups and pre as the -01s. Never had a -01 in my hands though so I was wondering about the sound likeness and difference.

I've heard so many ibanez before. I can say that they do sound good but to me.. the sound is very generic. With all due respect to those ibanez owners(including my friend hehe). The first thing that i noticed with the 01 is that it has its own voice. Its much deeper even if the eq is set on flat. My technician always tells me that my low B sound much much lower.. as if i was playing a super low A or G =) and that lakland sound... regardless of the pickup.. man.. its just an instrument meant to groove =)
They sound somewhat similar to me. The top end can go into overdrive (sizzly) with the stock preamp if it's pushed.
I'm pretty sure that the Dual Coil pups are the only ones that can be coil tapped or configured differently. I'm sure the Fat Stacks are great sounding pickups, though.
With the DC/3ZB combo I should be able to get any tone I'm looking for. I could put the pickups in series and the Z-mode switch in high Z for deep and clear - or I could have the pups in single coil mode and low Z mode for a different take on deep/clear. Plus, I could have one pickup in single coil mode and the other in series for a full range type tone.

Yes, that's how I'd define the MK-01 on the bass I had. For that reason I had the pre's processor swapped for a very nice replacemnet by Texas Instruments, and it got audibly better. More than that, I'd say it resulted in an overall fullier, round tone.

...if you're not talking Bartolini anymore. The Mk-5 is a better idea of the same shape factor as the Mk-1, coilsplittable, and they are all-american. I considered them as a replacement... But than I replaced the bass altogether.
Can't quite approve of that, man... pickups and pre do count. Seriously, I would start my Lakland family with a 55-01 if I hadn't had a Bartolini Mk-01 loaded bass. But, just as for you, those were big deals for me to haul Lakies overseas, one at a time, so I had to make up my mind. As fo my hindsight now, IMO, the NTMB-L plus MME-J combo is quite a different pair of shoes, really.
Yeah i know.. what i am saying is for me there is a tone that is kinda Laklandy. I don't know just my observation =)

I have.
They sound very similar with the obvious exceptions of the mahagony body wood and neck-thru construction on the Ibanez.
I prefer the bolt-on punch and the swamp ash brightness of the 01 series...

The MK5' are 4 wires per pickup, 2 for each coil,
which would make the splitable (if memory serves me correctly)...
