My take:
The stock pickups top end was still too glassy for me, even in passive mode. That's what pointed me to changing the pickups, as opposed to only the preamp.

I have the Nord Big Singles in a couple of other basses, and wanted to try something else...so I went with the dual coils. Had Nord had their preamp out when I did mine, that's what I would have used. As they didn't, I went with the LH3 as I wanted to try that.

Hey Chef,
I know they’re in different basses, but how do you like the Duals compared to the Big Singles?

I like them similarly well.
The dual, in single coil mode, sound pretty similar to the singles.
Neither "sound like a pure single coil J" ala Fralin, Aero or even Nord's own pure J offerings.

If you're thinking Big Singles, you might want to change that to Big Splits: same thing, but huim cancelling at the expense of a tiny lil bit of top end.

So if you wanted more of a P bass tone than a J bass tone... would the big splits be closer?

The Big Splits are still a single coil approch to tone.

If you want P bass tone, the DC's are gonna get you much closer, especially if you coil tap. The DC's in parallel get pretty close to that. Series is bigger and darker.

I had mine wired to the taps so I get single coil/dual parallel/dual series.
I often mix and match the settings and blend them together.

Thanks for the info. I am not completely happy with the tone of my 55-01. I will probably try changing strings first. I really miss my flats.

The glass would be half-full.
The preamp is the weakest link.
Try it and see how you like it.

I have a LH3 in my 01, it just what the doc ordered.

Lakland also has their own soapbar pickups I'm dying to hear a review.

Big Singles are passive, single coil so there are no coils to tap.
Only two wires...

hey supertanker, did you say lakland is making their own soapbars?
are they putting them in the 01's now?

I had Lakland send a set of the JO flats with the bass and I put them on immediately. It really makes a huge difference. I know it always does, but with this bass the lows are so enhanced with the flats, it's exaggerated. I'm sure I would notice those 'glassy' highs much more if I had left the rounds on for more than 10 minutes.
If all I stand to lose is a bit of highs with the Big Splits vs. Big Singles I just might go that route. I never boost the highs, they're either flat or I cut them occasionally. I'd like to check out the Nordstrand pre, what does it cost and where does one get them? I must admit I'd feel weird sending my bass back to Lakland to have them swap out all their guts for Nordstrands'. Maybe I'm being too sensitive.:hmm:

Yep! Dats right!

You can buy an 01 with Lakland pickups a LH3 and a passive/active switch...

So whose gonna be first?
yeah i saw that before but thought it might be a misprint.damn, id like to hear em' in action.they gotta be better than the mk1's, right?

edit: i just looked at laklands website and it still says the bart mk1's in the specs. are you sure?

edit again: look at the bass on the top of the page, if you look at the pickups it says bartolini mk1's but it says it has lakland pickups.its gotta be a misprint.

They feel great, sound great, the B is weaker than with rounds, Sounds great in the mix.
I just can't get used to not having the "zing" of rounds.
I put these Ti's on the 55-01 once a year or so and fall in love, but i slowly start missing the rounds.

Hey, these are great clips, thank you very very much Bill! :) I have a 44-01 with a rosewood fretboard (I'll join the club with photos asap) and I think I may put TI's after the sadowsky ss roundwounds which are already on it. The only thing that makes me think is that "zing" sound problem you already mentioned. I love it a lot. On the other side TI's sound very nice, especially with fingerstyle playing. Ok, let's see... Experience is everything...

Thanks again...

Hey Guys!

I just wanted to say thanks for this thread. It has been really informative. I have owned a 2002 55-01D for just over a year now(Formerly owned a Sadowsky MS5) and I love it! It's all stock except for the Dunlop straploks. I think I'll be selling my Ibanez ATK 305 to fund a pickup and preamp upgrade(US Bart MK and Lakland LH3)...I'll probably install them myself though...I can't part with her for any amount of time to have her worked on.

So I just wanted to show you some sexy pics of her on my bed that I took this evening. That's a Moody 4" strap to the right... What else would you hold such a sexy beast with? :smug:

That's what's HOT!

You could not have picked a better pair (LH3 + US Barts)!

Welcome to the club!!!
