Here is my 55-01 strung with my standard DR Black Beauties. I have had it for almost a year and last week I installed an NTMB in it. Seems to have done just what I wanted ... mellowed out the high strings. Love this bass, I do not ever see myself parting with it.

It could fit if it is strung through the bridge but i prefer to string it through the body for better resonance. Did you try them strung through the bridge? You'll probably find no difference in resonance.

is that so? Then i'd probably just string it through the bridge =) But wouldn't it affect the sustain? Which to you guys prefer? i am really worried that it wouold feel and sound different if i strung it through the bridge =(

"To be completely honest I don't think it makes that much difference. I cannot point to any sonic or physical advantages. The tension is set by the bridge saddle and the nut so that is out of the equation. When we started our 4-string (before it was called the 4-94) we were going after the older Stingray customer and that is the way they did it. I decided early on to give the customer the option (the first 100 or so were strung through body only.) I remember early on Pino telling me that Musician would not make him a string through body bass - they said it didn't;t make any difference. To Pino it did and they lost him because of that. It's not that hard to add that option so I thought I would just like to give the Musician all the options we can."

Coming from you guys and the MAN himself, i think i'd just string it through the bridge and see how it goes =) i'll give you a newbie's point of view on friday (thursday your time) after our practice =) THank you guys =) Wishing for a nordstrand fat stack/audere 3zb this Christmas (00,)--> imagine the face of that cute cat in shrek =) hehe What would you guys choose? Big splits or Fat stack? I'm looking for a fenderish slap tone but ah deeper fingering tone =) The best of both worlds hehe..

Wow, that's an honest answer.

I only string one bass through the body; my G&L L2500 Tribute. I do it because there is a know issue with the bridge pulling off. They only used two screws for a five string. Stringing through the body helps hold the bridge on.

My Lakland 55-01 has medium flats through the bridge.

Cons for string through body:
  • Need longer strings. Limits string choice.
  • Doesn't work well with most flats.
  • Puts a lot of stress on the strings at the break.
  • Arguably harder to install/remove strings.

Pros for string through body:
  • Pino might buy your bass ;)

Guys i'm choosing between the GHS Bass boomers ( .045 .065 .080 .100 .126) and the D'addario EXL170-5 (.045 .065 .080 .100 .130) I want to try out the GHS one but i don't know what to expect from a .126 gauge. Can you fill me in on this? I really have so many questions in my mind right now because my 13th month pay just came in hehe so i want to spend it wisely =)

GHS Bass Boomers are the same as the Lakland strings.

So if your bass came with the original strings, you've already tried GHS Bass Boomers.

I think the Lakland GHS strings are .128 on the B string....

Do you mean GHS makes strings for lakland? I'm a bit worried that the Low B string would be too tight because of the .126 gauge don't you think? or am i just being too technical haha..

I f i have the chance i'd buy 20 packs of lakland strings because it is the best string that i've used. I'm still on the stock strings that came with my bass ( 1 1/2 years) and it is still good especially when you compare it to the ernie ball =)

Haha... nice to see that quote. I actually was the one who posed that question to Dan on the LOG. I know most folks can't tell, but I can tell a difference between strung thru body and strung thru bridge. Heck, in a blind test I probably couldn't tell. Maybe it's placebo, but I can tell a difference in the way the bass 'feels' overall. I dunno... probably the only thing Pino and I have in common. haha. The only strings I have liked and felt comfy with thru-body have been the Joe Osborn flats on my older 44-01.

I generally use mine for 1 year...
