Here's my 5501 that I got a couple weeks ago that Leo at the factory set up for me and sent me. Yes, it's brand new. It's really, really nice. Plays like a dream. I love Lakland necks.

I have begun the upgrade of my 55-01 and all I have to say is Lakland's are some well put together basses. All the ground wires they use, shielded pickup cavities, and all the solder connections were solid. Even the MK-1 pickups had a piece of copper connected to the bottom grounding it to the copper in the cavity. This is making my install rather smooth.
I think instead of getting my custom I will get a 55-01 and mod it. thinking obp-3 pre with the push pull mids and nordstrand dual coils with coil tap switches!

I am putting in Nordstrand Big Singles with an Aggie OBP-3. It is at the Lakland factory as we speak. They were having some trouble with the pre though. When you turn up the treble pot the volume cuts out. I got the pre off of Ebay. I hope it was not bad.
I was wanting to go with an aggie obp-3 and nordstand dual coils. thats if I can find a bass seems like they all got bought up before I made up my mind
Careful, not all preamps are complimentary to all pickups. You might wanna call Mister Nordstrand to check and see if this is really a good combo. I have done a couple of retrofits for customers and some have been less than stellar. Mind you, that is not to say that either poduct is subpar. In some cases, pickups and preamps from different manufacturers can produce less than optimum results when combined.
I was thinking of pairing the Big Splits with an Audere preamp or giving the new Nordstrand preamp a try. I already have a Jazz with the NJ4SE / Audere combo and that worked out quite nicely.
Lakland 55-01 Poor Man's Passive
Warning: This probably voids the warranty and could cause sun spots! You have been warned. Also, many people claim that their preamp goes passive when the volume is pulled out. Mine doesn't. According to Lakland it just bypasses the EQ. If you have the passive version, you don't need this
The good news is you can go passive with no soldering and no changes to the bass. You can also easily go back to active. The bad news is you can't blend. The blend, and tone, pots are much too low values to use passive. You would have to replace the pots.
In the attachment I show the preamp. Disconnect it. The three arrows show a green wire, a purple wire, and an orange wire. The green wire is the neck pickup. The purple the bridge pickup. And the orange the output.
You can just strip some wire and shove it in the holes. You can connect either pickup to the output or connect both pickups to the output for a 50/50 blend. Tape down the connections and you are good to go!
The volume control will work, but none of the other pots will. Also, pulling the switch on the volume control works as a mute.
I would also recommend removing the battery. With the battery removed you can't really mess anything up even if you connect the wrong wires.
To revert, remove the wires, plug the preamp back in, and reinstall the battery.

Ei guys i just want to ask what strings are compatible with this bass. I bought a d'addario XL-170 and it was too short (the tapered part is still in the first fret. It could fit if it is strung through the bridge but i prefer to string it through the body for better resonance. Can anybody help me? most of the strings here in the philippines are standard scales =(
In D'addarios you need SL (Super Long).
You would need EPS170-5SL if you want to use ProSteels, EXL170-5SL for nickel strings.
Of course you can always use Lakland strings, guaranteed to fit...
