Does anyone one know where this should be attached? I opened the back to take a look at the workmanship on my new 55-01 and found this wire hanging loose. Its the black wire coming of the red wire of the neck p-up. I'm guessing it goes to ground on the volume pot as it looks like it may have come off the crappy solder joint there.

If you could pop your 55-01 open to confirm, I can fix it. I sent this to Lakland too but I'd like to get-er-done tonite so I can gig with it this weekend.

Not real impressed by the overall workmanship. As you can see, the solder joint for the grounds on the volume pot are poorly executed and they fat fingered the red wire of the neck p-up with the iron and melted the insulation. Doesn't impact the performance but that plus the disconnected wire leads me to be suspect to the overall workmanship on the electronics most of which I can't easily see.

TIA for advising the location for this wire.

On a happier note, I'd been asking about case recommendations . . . I pulled the trigger on a Gator ATA case. Bass fits perfectly. Nice case. Doesn't have the usual slimy Gator plastic and the latches are very high quality.

Question for you, if answered already my apologies, but is the bass Made in Korea or Made in Indonesia?

I'm thinking of getting a 55-01 again and just want to collect info on the quality of the Skylines from the new manufacturing location.

Nice case. Lots of room for cables, tuners, straps, music etc. What's the model? Gator ATA? I used SKB generic "Freedom" cases for my 55-01 and 55-02 when I had them, kind of ill-fitting really for the body-shape. Functional, but the bass had room to move around in it.

Its Indo made.

I think they should pop the hood in Chicago for a cursory review of the soldering and touch up the obvious weak points.

I haven't noticed any fallout from the switch from Korea to Indonesia except one thing. Hollowbody wood matching. I saw a number of sunburst hollowbodies at the lakland factories from the Korean factory, and the strips of wood comprising the top tops often looked like they had been assembled at random. Not a good thing on a $1300 instrument. Then I recently saw a couple of the indonesian ones. The tops look great! I asked about this, and Leo said it just looks like someone over in Indo is just taking the time to properly select the pieces for the tops.

As to checking the electronics. I don't know if they do or don't, but not having to install USA electronics (time and materials) is what keeps the -01 series so cheap.

I've been watching this to see what the effects have been to move production. Korea is a thoroughly modern country, almost like Japan (I've been there 5 times). Indonesia is... the third world. Maybe it's undeserved, but color me skeptical about these MII models.

Jury's still out for me before I dive back in.

My 4401 was made in Indonesia. The bass itself is impressively constructed and attractive (in a low-key way) and plays/feels significantly better than the price paid would suggest. Weighs about 8.2 lbs, which I believe is quite light for a Skyline. The only fault I found is the poor wiring and sloppy work in the control cavity. Since I don't like the Bart MK1 preamp, it is currently at my tech having a custom 5-knob Sadowsky pre installed. After a bit, I'll add some Nords if the Bart MK1 pups leave me cold - which I suspect they will. I have never played/seen a Skyline from Korea, but overall I'd have to say I'm very happy with the build quality of this Indonesian instrument.

Oh... as long as it is open, I'll take number 964, please!

Since I bought my 55-01 with the intention of replacing all the electronics, I'm more concerned with the build quality of the wood and metal parts. After spending a few hours with it this weekend, I must say I'm VERY pleased with how well it's built, the feel of the neck and the overall finish of the instrument. I also don't dislike the stock electrinics as much as I expected. They will get replaced pretty soon regardless, but the sounds out of my 55-01 in stock form are very usable and versitile.

The Indonesian basses should get a QC inspection and plex'd in Chicago before they go out.

Maybe your bass got damaged in shipping or somebody dropped the ball in QC?

The wiring (and soldering) looks pretty crappy to me.

I'd make sure the crew at Lakland knows...

It did get Plek'd and the instrument sure took a lick'n on the way to my house which I'm sure contributed to the solder joint failing but at the end of the day it was poor workmanship.

Lakland did get the pix.

I bit the bullet and ordered a 5501. Music 123 had a killer sale and I got a brand spanking new natural with the all maple neck.

Wanted to get the 5501 club members' opinions on Pick ups and preamps. I'm leaning toward the Nordys. Haven't decided on which Nordys. I'm also looking at preamps, Sadowsky, Nordy, J retro. Haven't decided though and I'm open to anything.

I'm looking for something that can be really agressive and funky, aka "Marcus Miller" and then turn around and play really warm like Oteil Burbridge. I would rather it be more agressive than not. Please chime in with your suggestions for a sax player learning how to play bass.

Nord DC5's with coil taps for single coil (sharp sparkly jazz tones), dual parallel (warmer, fatter), and dual coil series (bigger, fatter, tamed highs) will do all that.
The lakland factory did my install, and I had them put the LH3 preamp in there at the same time. They offer a passive tone option as well that I would have opted for had I known a the the time.
