I still love the heck outta mine; tho it's different than yours in that it's stuffed with Nord DC5's and an LH3 preamp.
This weekend I ran it thru an ampeg svp-cl preamp fed into my wt800b's power section, and an ae410...awesome.

With the MK1 US Bart replacement, does the sound retain any of its aggressive nature, or does that get completely lost?

It doesn't loose anything.

The US barts are exponentially better.

But if you want to upgrade the first thing to upgrade is the preamp.

I'm partial to the LH3, but almost any quality preamp will do...

Thanks for the reply, SuperT.

I have a custom 5-knob Sadowsky pre on the way from NY that should arrive tomorrow. After the install we'll see, but my gut is telling me that the MK1s gotta go as well. I'm torn between the US Barts and some Nordtrands.... any opinons, anyone?

Hey if this is the 'soon to be a Lakland owner's group can I join? Currently saving / working overtime / selling non-essential organs for a 4401!! :hyper: - Simply the most beautiful looking bass I've ever seen  :

Since I've spent the last 5 years gigging and recording on a £140 'Vintage' stingray copy I can only imagine it'll sound amazing by comparison, but I've noticed a lot of people mod the preamp / pickups on these.
I'm primarily a fingerstyle player who's into rock / indie / funk (and possibly a little slappage her and there) and I'm more of a 'crisp warm clean' fan than 'honk' fan (although it's okay) - What's the recommendation for the first upgrade (since it might take me a while to save up for it! ;) )? Anyone tried Lindy Fralin (not even sure if they do pickups that fit a 4401)?

I've experienced Passive Chi's and I know they sound great. I want to go passive with my 55-01 and, and I'd love to get a pair of Chi-Sonics in there, but $600 vs $250 (for a pair of DC's) is a pretty stark difference.

A few questions.

1) Anyone have any experience with Passive DC's?

2) Anyone able to compare the Passive MK1's with DC's?

3) In the meantime I'd like to wire it up passive with V/V/T and two 3-way switches (Series/Paralel/single coil) does anyone know if the MK1's are 4 wire or 2 wire?

4) While I'm asking quesions, anyone have any experience with the USA Bart MK replacements run passive?

As I recall the MK-1's were two wire. I've got Nordy DC's in mine. I plan on hitting the coil switching project this weekend. I like the Nordy's, but I don't feel like I "know" them yet because I've just heard them wired parallel.

My (non-Lakland) fretless has Barts of some sort. It sounds great with the preamp bypassed but not-so-good with it engaged. I don't really think the preamp sounds bad but it takes the wonderful organic tone of the amplified fretless away. I definitely lean toward passive.
