Just curious,

I've noticed quite a few people have changed out the p'ups in their 55-01s but I haven't seen any 44-01 swaps...WHAT GIVES?!?!?

I did, and I'm pretty sure I posted it here. US Bart MK4 and NTMB pre.

I would love to try a Nordstrand pickup in my other 44-01, but their 4 string pickups aren't the same size. There would be a gap of about 1/8" at the top and bottom.

I recently tried the fat stacks & dual coils in my 44-01.

And while they both sounded great, I just couldn't get over the gap around the pickguard. :rollno:

I'd love to have either in a bass that was routed for them.

So, MK1's went back in with the Bart NTMB pre & I'm happy with that for my fretless.

I'm back in, I hopelessly sold my 01 maple fretless (previously posted #501) & have been kicking myself ever since!

So I found a worthy replacement AND I got the maple fretless neck back as well. :hyper:

Mods to come I'm sure...

what case is that?

and generally what hardshell cases do you guys use for your laklands?

Hi guys :)

After reading all this post i guess i have to get a 55-01 :)

It seems to be one of the best 5-er there is.

Would love to have one in cherry sunburst, but i guess
they don´t make them in that colour atm.

Upgrade would be Nordstrand big singles and preamp
if needed. Will try the stock one for a while first.

Good Choice!

It should be fairly easy to find a used one in Cherry Burst.

My next 5501 will have Big Singles and a probably a Nordy preamp...

I MAY be switching affiliations soon and joining this group soon.

I have my eye on a burst/rosewood 55-01 in our classifieds. I have a party interested in buying my 17 YO Carvin LB-75 (has some of the SWEETEST koa you'll ever see!) and if everything falls into place-he buys the 55-01, I pick it up from the seller and ship my Carvin off to the buyer. Kinda hard to let go of the Carvin after all these years but I think its time for a change.

I don't know if I would let go of a 17 year old bass, but a 5501 would be an excellent choice...

Here's one that I'm sorry I let go. It was heavy, had a sort of "mottled" grain pattern, was a bit sizzly up high but I liked it. It had da mojo.

I "upgraded" and traded this for a 5502 Cherryburst quilt that was beautiful to look at, sounded great, but for some reason the neck was quite different from my 5501. It had a thinner headstock than all other Skylines that I compared it to, and the profile just felt "not quite right" to me. I couldn't get the action the same and I just missed my old 5501. I ended up trading it back to the dealer withing a month and naturally my 5501-in-trade was already snapped up. My new Sadowsky is helping me get through it though. ;) I'll get another 5501 some day.

I sold my 55-01 because of the weight. I don't know if they are all that way or not. I have a bad back and it was just a little too heavy. But that's ok, I have two 44-01s that are lightweight now. I don't really miss the B string, since I'm playing classic rock now and it was all played on 4 strings anyway. If I ever need a 5 string again I still have a lightweight Carvin and Yamaha.
