Lakland 55-01 Vs Yamaha TRB5

Just wondered on your guys opinion on these instruments... Apart from the obvious subjective thoughts... But in your opinion what is the better quality instruments... i guess im asking your thoughts, likes dislikes of both?

The TRB in question is the trb5 after the TRB5p MK1..the one with the slap cutaway

TRB 5 +3!

The first generation ones are killer. The mid switch can let you go from thumpy reggae, to a nice punchy slap tone, to that nasal jaco sound all with the flip of the switch. Tweak it however you see fit, but it will work across various styles. The bass itself is a workhorse.

What are the necks like on that specific TRB.. ive heard you can get the action very low, and the necks are very shallow?.. Ive also heard that you can get a real growl going on with the TRB, but is very clean otherwise..

does the TRB preamp and pups do the buisiness.. or has anyone changed out these items?

I didn't think the 55-01 was garbage. Of the two Skyline's I played in store, I thought the 55-01 sounded waaaay better than the 55-02. Not sure what the pickups were in the 55-02 (Bartolini/Lakland/???) but it sounded weak compared to the 55-01.

Any mid level (or higher) Yamaha I've ever played was solid. The earlier TRB's are great looking!

Ive had 7 Fenders.. USA/CS/MIJ's... all jazz basses..just want a change.. actually trading for the TRB with my MIJ surf green 62 RI Jazz... on my Q's..?

They are very very clean and modern. I have never tried to get a growl but it is not something I would expect from that bass.

Excellent pups and pre. The pups are single coils with a dumby coil so you get all of the good attributes of a single coil without the hum.

I think any TRB5 except for the newer TRB1005 would be a better deal than a 55-01. 55-01s are very well made, but their electronics are mediocre. The original TRB5, second generation TRB5, and the TRB5II are all top of the line or upper tier instruments that nowadays turn for pretty low prices except for the old P/J TRB5 which usually runs around $800-$950.

A better comparison for a TRB5 would be a 55-02 Deluxe.

Hey that's Dr. Funkdamental's old TRB6! I had one of those, and it is one of the basses I have owned that I miss most of all.
