+1. I still have a skyline DJ and haven't had these issues. I haven't heard of that volume-pot problem before.I owned a skyline DJ a while back and noticed neither of the issues you have. The pocket was tight and no volume meant no volume. Maybe you have a mute switch to help you out?

Hi there,
I got a Skyline Darryl Jones 4 about 6 weeks ago. I'm amazed with this bass, unbelievable tone and matching playability.
However, I have noticed that when both the volume pots are turned fully down I am still getting a signal. This is very temperamental, sometimes there is no signal and other times there is a signal. It seems not quite right. Any DJ owners out there who have noticed this?
Also, just out of curiosity, how is the neck pocket on your DJ, mine is not as tight as I'd like it, both my cheaper guitars have a much tighter neck pocket! I think this is purely an aesthetic grumble, although I must admit it does bug me a little.
Apart from this I'd give this bass 10/10 and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a new bass.
I'd love to hear some feedback from some DJ owners.
Many thanks.

A couple of years back I picked up a used 44-02 fretless. I contacted Lakland and they told me that all their fretless basses came with the same medium stainless roundwounds as the fretted 4's. I didn't try them on that bass, due to my concern for stainless rounds on a unfinished board. My favorite strings for that bass ended up being DR Sunbeams, which are nickel roundwounds on a round core. I did not try flats, though I'm sure they would sound great if you are looking for that tone. A string that I did try, and expected to like - but hated - was D'addario Half Rounds. I found them very 'sticky' and hard to slide on. As always YMMV.
