I've seen fairly think plastic sticker material...just don't remember where:-( Some 3M product or something...Something will come up in a Google search.
If we describe the Barts' sound as full-bodied, dense, and elastic in the low-mid department, the Laklands I would characterize as, bright, biting, snappy but in the classical manner. It is closer to the F***** field than what "EMG" usually implies. I also found that the sound has lost some of its density and velvetness in the low mids, but really nothing you can't cure with the Bart preamp which has some warmth by itself. I never tried the Lakland pre so I can't relly advise on that.

as you see, some models and versions, as the JO5, for instance, are inavailable with them.
I have no idea about the PLEK job but, the Shoreline series being in the ESP shop field quality-wise and price-wise, I assure you the fretwork is perfect (I've had a SL4-94 and a SL55-94)
I've never tried the Nordies, and you might have a tough time finding someone who's used all three.
I would say the single-coil Chis are thicker-sounding than any "regular" single-coil J bass pickup, have more mids and are relatively darker-sounding on the top end. I think they sound better than the soundclips on Lakland's site--but do compare the clips of the two pickups, anyway.

I agree...I just want to add that they have a wider frequency range that the standard Lakland J pickups.
OK...latest crazy idea. I emailed Brian G. at Lakland to find out what it will cost me to (possibly) upgrade the 4-94 fretless. Here's what I'm thinking: add fretlines in rosewood (so the color doesn't pop that much but it still helps me for reference), coat the ebony board, and maybe swap the Bart system for LH. I used the 4-94 again Sunday morning during the last song of each service and the presence was better but still a bit dark and mellow for me. I did boost treble and mids and actually cut the bass a bit (mids dip-switch set to 700hz). What do ya guys think?
For the time being, I'm going to swap the Lakland steels on the DJ4 for the DR black beauties on the 4-94 fretless to see if makes any difference. Fortunately both set of strings are strung thru-body so they should line up perfect.

Maybe someone out there has a lined fretless neck they'd trade you for the unlined. Unlined Lakies don't seem to be all that common, and there might be someone who wants it!

Honestly, i don't really like the Lakland Steels/GHS Boomers. I think they sound darker than others.
I'd suggest some nickel strings...I liked the ones that were on the Proto.
If you have to have steels, I'd go for some DR's...they have a few choices.
I don't like steel roundwounds, but I do have some Booty Collins DR coated steels on my 4-07 and love them! They have this cool crunchy sound.
i actually like the lakland steels, but i think they are a bit abrasive to use on an uncoated board. id use nickles if your going for roundwound.

I'm kinda OCD like that as well, and it's sorta killing me that I have a bass (the BG5 Proto) with NO serial number..... (Maybe when I'm up there in September, they can stamp some really cool custom serial number on it for me, lol).
