LAKLAND OWNERS GROUP #28

Hey Guys.
Well,stage one is complete.
Got this back on Sat and took it straight off to a gig. It sounded great and im happy i went ahead with it. While its not a Fender P it has a much thicker tone and its close enough.
Ive got the bridge pup on a push pull knob to take it out of circuit when not using it and this works well.

I really love the look of it now as well. I was going for a tort PG but black looks great. The pics really dont do it justice. I found it difficult to get any decent, reflection free shots tonight.

While this was going to be the end of it i now find the bridge pup is picking up a lot of RF noise. While i didn't expect to use it i found the two pups together made a nice tone. I believe this is the norm for a single coil pup although i never noticed it before.
So i guess ill now look in to getting a humbucking pup to go in the bridge position.
Also thought about a MM pup instead but not sure i want any more routing done.

Dave:

OH MY GOD!!!! that is awesome! I will do that someday myself....the exact same way as you have it....

I am surprised you are getting any noise....when I ordered my BG5 PJ Leo told me that they were ordering a pair of pickups for you and me....those should be a set of PJs....the J is split to match the P.....hmmmm...do you get the sound with the bridge solo'd or when played with the P pickup?

that is one awesome bass.....I am officially jealous......

Yeah, I know what you mean. There's always something that is a little off. The black on black looks great though. With the block/binding, it is super sweet to tell you the truth.

If you like the PJ but that one is a little off for you, there are some others out there too. I've been thinking about one myself (MVPJ5) if I get the loot together.

Jessie - don't talk him into selling it yet.....he JUST got it...unless, of course, he offers it to me.... :D

This is the first PJ ive ever played so its early days but i do think ill like that tone more than i thought.
Ive never liked Jazz's and i did think it was a bit silly buying the DJ5 but i really love block and inlays. I knew i could sort the tone out but the look is what sold me.

All in all i am happy, just need to decide on a new bridge pup now. Ill give it a few gigs first though, i might get away with using the Lakland if its not buzzing too much, Im hoping it gets hidden by the rest of the band.

Dave: IF you are getting buzzing when playing both the P and J there is definitely an issue...e-mail kirk and see what he recommends.....

my pair sounds GREAT and it is the same pair of pickups as yours...

yeh well....you are in for a SURPRISE my friend...I LOVE being married to a low maintenance woman.....she shops at Target and Kohls and is happy....I actually buy more clothes than she does on an annual basis!!!

am I "weird"?????

I was just mentioning to her we have a dyslexic family...she was out raking the leaves and I was in the kitchen cooking...we have a monthly thing with church where we go to differnet houses for a meal...one house cooks the main dish, one family brings the veggie, one teh sald, one the dessert etc.....4 couples in all....it is our turn for the main dish and I was trying something new (always!!!)

she admits I am a better cook than she is but she is a better baker!

I repeat...am I "weird"?????

any other Lakie fans like to cook???? I really enjoy it...

I like to cook, and my sweetie is more of a baker too.

BUT, you are still weird Doude :D.

Thanks. Its nice isnt it ;-)
Its turned out well. The Black PG seems to make the sparkle black look a bit lighter, i like that look.
The tone is a bit fuller thna my P5, a bit less in the mid dept but thats great a si play through Schroeder cabs and these are quite mid heavy so this evens it out and adds a bit more low end while still having that P thump.
I was surprised about the noise as well. It wasn't there before the pup change but my knowledge about this sort of thing is very limited so i just have to go with what others say.
No idea why it does it but its definitely RF noise and not earth hum etc. Its dead quiet at home in to the PC.
I guess if i had got a proper PJ set it might not happen but i thought i would be ok. Its not a big deal putting in a humbucking Jazz though.
The noise is there with or without the neck pup, it seems to go away if i back the bridge pup off to about half, although maybe thats just me not being able to hear it.
Its mainly the neck pup i want to use so for now i can live with not having the bridge on if its too loud. It might also be better at certain venues. We only play with a Vocal PA so its not like it will be coming out of a huge PA rig, i can keep it in check.

Thanks to everyone for the great comments, makes it worth while.

Thanks, ill do that tomorrow. The shop were a bit vague when i brought it up.

I can see me selling this at some point but i think it will stay with my until the Skyline BG5 comes out.

EDIT: just sent kirk an email, lets see what he says. Thanks for the idea.
