He said he ordered from an East Coast (I'm thinking USA) store, but lives in Belgium. I'm thinking there's no way he could have played it first.

I'm also gunning for his first 'slight' being more of a language gaffe than an attempt to come off the way he did.

No problem. I live in two languages and end up one one end of that sort of thing a lot.

Now, about that bass: The guys here have come up with a bunch of different ideas, and to distill everything to the essentials, I think that the problem here is either the dealer or the shipping company. If there string retainer was actually missing and not rattling about somewhere in the box, then that's a dealer issue, because I guarantee that Dan wouldn't let a US-built Lakland go in the condition in which yours arrived. The strap button thing is weird as well. Is there any evidence of abuse on the horn? Like maybe it was dropped or something?

Myself, I'd tell the dealer I wanted a refund and get rid of the bass. if that's not possible, then take the bass to your local luthier and have the electronics looked at, you may end up with a great-sounding bass.
