I just received my custom-built new 54-94 from Carl Pedigo! That's right, it's a 54-94, so it's 34"! Some of you may know that Carl is authorized to make custom Laklands that are fully covered by the Lakland warranty, and when I asked Dan in January about the possibility of a 34" 55-94, Dan suggested I talk to Carl about it. Well, the bass is in, and it's amazing, just like Carl was throughout the process.
About the bass:
It's 34", lightweight ash body, quilted maple top, maple/maple neck, LH-3 pickups, and passive electronics. Carl had the crazy idea of wiring two volumes for the bridge pickup alone: one volume per coil, which effectively replaces the need for the coil tap switch. I took the idea; we'll see if I stick with it or rewire it to the 'normal' Lakland config, but for now, it's pretty cool! So the controls are neck pickup volume, bridge pickup forward coil volume, bridge pickup rear coil volume, and passive tone control. The bass weighs less than 9lbs, which makes me a happy camper. The finish was my idea; I wanted a burst that didn't look like anything else, and Carl totally nailed the image in my head. At my request, he also took a little of the shoulder off of both sides of the neck to bring the profile a bit closer to a Jazz profile (which is what I'm used to), and again, his work was excellent.
So how many of you have always wanted a Lakland 55-94, but haven't made the call because you don't like 35" scales? To read the Lakland threads over the last several years, there are a bunch of you. I know I was one. Anyway, with Carl on the scene and doing his own builds (again, backed by the full Lakland warranty, not that you'll need it), that whole close-but-no-cigar thing is a thing of the past! Check out Carl's website at Invalid Link Removed, and get in touch with him from it. He was super-responsive with emails, full of insight, and most importantly, he builds a bad ass bass!

In truth, it basically sounds like an ash/maple 55-94/-02 with the preamp flat and pickups dimed. What I was really after was the change in feel that the shorter 34" scale brings. What's always kept me away from Laklands in the past is that I just don't like the extra tension in the strings that 35" scales have relative to 34". With this bass, I've got that great Lakland sound and the feel that I like in the same package!
Quite good! I'd put it up against any other 34" bass. It doesn't have the tension of the 35" versions (obviously, physics being what they are), so it might be a smidge less deep. However, it's a worthy trade to me to get some of the 'give' I like in the D and G strings, and it's plenty deep as it is. One of the reasons I wanted this bass was to contrast against my Nordy Jazz, which has that great single-coil midrange, but a more rolled-off low end (like any vintage-styled Jazz). The 54-94 is going to be my modern, pants-flapping deep sound, and this 34" low B is going to nail it. Can't wait to get it up to gig volume!

Fantastic! I've been going to Carl for three years (just hung out with him at the shop for a while yesterday, in fact) and I can't say enough about him. I'm jealous you have a bass built just by him. That's a really cool burst, too!

Carl Pedigo is THE MAN!! Love the bass bro!! Personally, I LOVE 35" scale, but I'm glad to see that there's an option for the other guys.

I saw this the last time I was in teh shop but was "sworn to secrecy"......very interesting color combo......it is growing on me more now that i see it again....
I was so blown away that i did not even notice the lack of knob and switch...very interesting! VERY INTERSTING AND UNIQUE! never heard of a passive 55-94 before!
BTW - JP told me I can release to everyone that this is now an "official" Lakland option.....
more "options" and new ideas to come later this summer and early fall....
I am SURE this will sell alot of basses for Lakland...
