There are three things that I know to know the newer barts from the old ones. The older ones were installed until late 2001 (mine is a late 2001 and still had them). The finish of the casings of the two pickups was different to the eye and to the touch, the bridge pup feeling like more "worn in" than the neck one. The logo on the two was made in a different manner too (like, one pressed in, the other sticking out), making it look as if the pickups came from different batches.

Hokay ... so I have an early 2004 bass which suggests the later barts, but the pickup covers look exactly like the ones in the pic, with both logos raised, which I think you're suggesting means early barts. Not sure about the finish.

yes, '04 with both logos raised should be the newer barts. if the casings feel /look the same on both pickups, that is the third mark. As you may see on the pic I attached, the "older" barts' bridge pup casing is a bit smoother, the neck pup is just a notch more "wavy", 3-D.

Only Lakland and Chis. I must have missed the post.

Not moving away from chis by any means. Just my love the the P bass has really taken hold. Comparing single coil ChiSonics to standard Lakland J pickups...

The Chisonics are more open, and have a thicker tone. Like a Darkstar, but with more mids. The top is very open and glassy. Can be nice and smooth with the tone dimmed, but get very angry when played with some gusto, and tone up! My favorite Jazz pickup for sure!

Anyone on the fence about picking up a LOG bass...go for it! I've been playing this BG5 a lot since I got it, and man...you will be so stoked to get a BG5 for yourself. This thing just KILLS!!! Go get one!!! Trust me!!

yup....prototypes in at Lakland in about 11 days!!! teh count down to LOG bassdom begins!!!! I cannot believe that it took 4 (or 5?) tries to get one done!!! (well "officially" anyways!)

now I have this little idea... I am on the fence but can't afford it now... But I might consider trade-feeling: Nessie for a Skyline fretless 5 and the LOGbass... makes sense ?

Thanks guys for the props on my new lakland 5502 black/maple..

Initially I was apprehensive about how Id feel about a maple neck (ive only played rosewood).. But after just two weeks, Im very comfortable and very happy. That doesnt mean I dont love rosewood - Ill take one of each thank you!!!!\

but u were right, I have serious Lakland fever now - especially after the factory tour and how cool everyone was....Im trying to trade my Musicman Sterling for a Lakland 4402 Rosewood...

Since you just purchased a Fender P as well, i'd love to hear your thoughts.... a "shootout", if you will, on the BG VS. Fender P. I always like to hear other peoples opinions.

i would like to hear your opinion as well.....when i bought my first BG (a 4 string) I also had a 2001 50th anniversary Fender P......I was going to keep both but the Glaub got palyed more and the fender less so.....one had to go...

Rootbeer mahogany, single coils, jazz neck width, setup for BEAD tuning.... I've already found a sound that "does it" for me : neck pup at 80%, br full on, tone full on.

Ive been offered (from a store) one of their Lakland JO4s for £130 cheaper than ordering in a brand new 44-60...apparently they are all mint condition brand new...but its the UK so things are sometimes delayed here.

Not sure when Plek started, but the serials are all 2008 and they are all Korean.

Not sure whether to get one of those or spend more and get a brand new 2010 Indonesian 44-60.

Any views on this?

Do the Skylines now ship with gig bags as standard? Will this bass (an 08) have been Plek'd?

I know this is a Lakland thread, but anyone compared one to the rather nice Fender (sorry!) Roadworn Jazz (a VERY nice Jazz I must say).

I would save the cash and get the one in stock.....it is not PLEK'd (most likely) but the cost savings is enough to consider....I think you will find the fit and finish nice...I have a korean JO5 and love it (it is the only Skyline still in my stable if that says anyhting)....

Skylines do not ship with gig bags or cases but you can buy them....your dealer should be able to get one....Lakland justy came out with new gig abgs which are really nice (I just got one last week) and new SWEET cases are in within the next 4+ weeks.

I might be just about ready to become a Lakland owner, and I have a question: I'm looking at a 2005 40-02 in the used market. It has Bartolini's instead of the Lakland pickups. Could someone enlighten me to the difference between the two?

I think you got your answer in a few posts after...barts = warmer and darker...LH3 = brighter...

I would still go for the Lakland, but that's just me. I find the build quality to be much higher with the Laklands than the RW's, and I've played both. As matter of fact, I just returned a RW and bought another Lakland instead...

How do I date my 55-94 ? Bought 2nd hand in 2005, probably first sold in mid-late 2004 (slight guesswork). Has a 4 digit serial number stamped on the side of the headstock ... can that be decoded ?

I see you already found the pdf on the lakland site.....that is the best way! serial numebrs are punched in the US necks when the bass is built so it is pretty accurate....

that's a decision.

I don't think board replacement is something I'd usually go for with Lakland that didn't have any neck problems. Skyline necks can be bought from Lakland , price to be expected is about $250. I don't remember if Skylines have the ebony unlined option though.
Used Barts for the -94/-02 sometimes can be found in the classified section at $100-150
A MIK Skyline has to be pre- september '08, BTW

I am paying more (about $350) for my fretless SKYline neck....all Skyline necks are lined...

My primary reason for replacing the 'board would be to get an unlined fretless, which is not an option with skyline necks unfortunately (so far as I know). Secondary reason would be to replace rosewood or maple with ebony.

I hadn't thought about used barts ... thanks for that.

Uber frustrated with my bass right now. Trying to do a set up on it since its been so humid around here lately. I can't win with this thing! Got the neck nice and straight, got the action set where I like it, but random string buzz is blowing my mind. For the most part I'm buzz free until I hit the strings with some gusto, and with low action buzz is expected. But random fret's are buzzing (not major, but enough to annoy) no matter what I do, and any alterations I make to the setup change the feel from where I have it set. Intonation was a bastard too, no matter how much I drew the saddles back the fretted 12th note was still sharp compared to the harmonic. Eventually I got it but only after major adjustments to both the E and G strings. I have very little patience for these things and feel like I'm leaving myself with a half-assed setup. It's not neccesarily bad but I feel like it could be better. Really just need to vent hahah.

Also, I'm having a problem with my A string bottoming out on the first fret, I've tried everything under the sun to remedy the problem but nothing has worked. I talked to Brian at Lakland on the phone about it and worse case scenario could be a warped neck. Maybe this is causing my string buzz in random spots issue too. I'll have to take it to a tech sometime.

Update: Checked my intonation for ***** 20-30 minutes or so after setting it, G-string was way out. Didn't check the rest, kind of figured screw it. Either I suck at setting basses up (can do guitars all day) or I'm just not having any luck with this thing so to the tech it goes. Just bugs me that I can't get this done myself.

Carl discusses the correct order of events to use with adjustments. In regards to the random fret buz, maybe the nut has been filled down slightly too deep? Maybe it's possible to install a spacer/shim (piece of business card) under the affected string at the nut as a test? I suspect you may need to back off the truss rod slightly to allow the neck to pull forward just a bit. At the end of the day, the neck should have a slight bit of concave curve to it in the middle in most cases, not straight/flat from one end to the other - again, this is covered in the videos. He discusses using a business card as a rough tool if you don;t have the feeler gauges he uses.

Of course, you could always send off to Lakland for a Plek job/setup for $125 if you prefer.

If the neck is twisted, you should be able to tell by looking down from above the headstock toward the bridge. If the headstock looks out of plane with the rest of the bass, it's twisted. The neck on my DJ5 that twisted had random odd spots with fret buzz... seemingly most on the A string. It took me a while to realize it was twisted because I hadn't been playing it much and never thought to look down the neck. Once I did that, it was pretty obvious.

May also be a slightly raised fret somewhere that needs to be tapped back down, which does happen on occasion as well. If you're really having issues, you should prob take it to a reliable luthier.

I did watch the vids first, otherwise I would have had no idea what to do Anyway, I tried the shimming thing to no avail, but noticed some pretty deep ruts in the nut, so I suspect that is the problem. I'm having it looked at by a luthier so he'll be able to give me the run down.

But, I noticed in the pics after I bought it that the holes for body-through stringing seemed misaligned. Now that I've received the bass, I can see that the hole for the E string is, without question, out of alignment:

The guy I bought it from was not the original owner, and had never noticed it. I've asked him to contact the previous owner (he knows him) and find out if he was the original owner, and hopefully get some more info.

Anyway, I've never seen a Lakland with that type of issue. Has anyone else? Any thoughts? Is this nothing to worry about?

I don't recall seeing this issue, personally. It's a bummer, but if you're able to use the holes without a problem and everything lines up OK on top (bridge, pickups, strings, etc.), I wouldn't worry about it.
