I think the plekking started around 2008. I'm almost positive that all Indonesian Skylines have been plekked. My guess is that there is a chance the Korean one has not. You will need to ask.

That being said, there's no big difference between Indonesian and Korean Skylines (I've had both), but plekking does make a huge difference IMHO and I would always try to buy a plekked one.

Wish I could help you with the comparison, but I'm a 5 string guy...

I responded in the other thread but I will say it here too. I think the key think you mentioned here was a NICE road worn. Assuming it is built well and sounds good, then good on you with whatever bass you get. I find myself having to play too many fenders to find one with good build quality and tone. They are kinda all over the map. Laklands are very consistent. Every one I pick up feels like the one before it. The JO's are killer jazz basses. I think the older fralins have a bit more "vintage" jazz tone while the lakland pickups are a bit more modern, but still have a killer Jazz tone. I have not played a road worn that I like. I personally think they are a bit pricey for a MIM. Good luck!

The Plek'ing started in late 2008, not long before the first Indonesian Skylines came in. So this one probably isn't. But I don't think the difference in playability will, on average, be noticeable. I'd save money and go with this one. BTW, the Skylines do not come standard with gig bags or cases.

Thanks for the input. I agree they should at least have gig bags. The problem is, the 'location of build' cannot really come in to the comparison as the Fender Roadworn is more like a budget version of a Fender Custom Shop...so mexican they might be, but they are nitro/vintage custom shop parts/alnico pups.

If the Lakland was guaranteed to be a more modern one I might take it. The thing is, Lakland and the store told me it must have been Plek'd, but its Korean and 2008...and apparently the whole JO4 stock they have is 2008...and the ones in the store that HAVE been Plek'd have the official Plek tag. It annoys me as I feel like im being fobbed off a bit just to get a sale.

If its Plek'd, ill have it I reckon. You can understand that if a bass is 2 years old....how can it be 'new'?

Im going to email the store and ask if they have any with the proper Plek tags.

I would still go for the Lakland, but that's just me. I find the build quality to be much higher with the Laklands than the RW's, and I've played both. As matter of fact, I just returned a RW and bought another Lakland instead...

Hi peter,

The difference between the Bart and the Lakland systems (pickups and preamp), from all that I've heard and experienced, is that the Laklands are more aggressive and can get zingier, while the Barts have been described as more warm-sounding. Some folks like one or the other, others like both.

To expand on what Greg said, the LH3 could be described as a more "modern sound" and the Barts as "vintage" when comparing the two. Another thing to note is that many people have said that the LH3 does a better job of imitating the Stingray sound, but the Barts do a better P bass, so you may want to take that into account.

However, I played a P bass prior to me getting my 55-02 (with the Lakland guts) and I am very pleased with the tones I can get, so you can factor that into your decision as well :)

Oh and I almost forgot, how old is the 44-02 you're looking at? Because I've heard that the older Bartolini system poos all over the newer one.

Now the question (J pickup content):
guys, how would you compare J pickups (either singles or humcancellers) on your Laklands by Lakland/Hanson, the Chis, Fralins, Nordstrands? I know the difference between the humcancellers by Bartolini and L/H on my 94-s and the Chis on Nessie. Have listened to the Fralins, Laklands and Chis comparison on the site (thanks a lot Ian!). I think I have got a few ideas, but the computer speakers are pretty ******. Also, no Nordstrands there

I said pretty much the same thing several threads ago. The included flight case was part of my decision to go with a Fender American Standard for my P-bass rather than wait for that spanky LOG Bass. Once I factored in the exchange and everything, the Lakland would have come out to more, with the same case.

Uh, I'd only look at the Fender over the Lakland if you can try it out and make sure the dead spot's not too bad, the build quality's okay, etc. To put my post above into context, I chose a Fender over a Lakland specifically because it was a 2008/2009 American Standard. Those are absolutely the only Fenders one should even *think* about buying sight unseen, and even then, I tried it, gave the store hell over the set-up, tried it again after they'd set it up for me, and *then* bought it.

My 55-02's not PLEK-ed, and the fretwork is excellent. PLEKing is as much a way for a guitar builder to save on man-hours as is it about great fret jobs. If the bass seems to suit you, you won't even care whether the fretting was done by man or machine.

Thanks for the input. I currently have 3 08-10 American Standards and they are fantastic, no doubt. 2 Ps and 1 J, I jst want another J..and I want the right one!

Although the RW is 'Mexican', I hear amazing things about the playability and 60s tone which it nails apparently. Nothing like the normal Mexican basses Fender make.

In that case, I'd better not look into them. THe last thing I need is yet another bass on my GAS list. ;)

When I priced them out, the LOG was cheaper. The Fender was ~$1,300, plus 10% tax (I'd never buy a Fender I haven't played) and another $50-75 to get it setup. The LOG is $1,000 and a hardhell case is ~$100. Is it different elsewhere? Just curious how things shake out elsewhere.

Denis, aren't Nessie's Chis in the J positions? I'm pretty sure you have a passive option on there, no? I think Ian's sound clips tell the story better than I or anyone else could with words (get some headphones for your computer, my friend, they'll make a world of difference :)).

The Fralins, to me, embody that '60s J tone just about perfectly. The single-coil Chis, in comparison, sound thicker (halfway between a J and a P, if that makes any sense) and grindier with more mids. I don't think I can speak too knowledgeably on the Lakland/Hanson J pickups. A little more "modern", maybe a little more '70s J-sounding? Please note the word "little" being used twice. I don't think they'll be confused with humcancelling Sadowskys anytime soon.:D

Nordstrand J pickups, I have no idea about.

Hi again. Ive just got an email from Fender and all the parts are standard Mexican parts, even the pickup, just aged.

They say the extra cash is for the work on the bass to make it look like it does.

Bit of a shame really. The nitro is worth an upgrade, but I expected US pickups.
